“My name is Meredith Gentry, but of course it’s not my real name. I dare not even whisper my true name after dark for fear that one hushed word will travel over the night winds to the soft ear of my aunt, the Queen of the Air and Darkness. She wants me dead. I don’t even know why.”
Meredith Gentry, Princess of the high court of Faerie, is posing as a human in Los Angeles, living as a P.I. specializing in supernatural crime. But now the Queen’s assassin has been dispatched to fetch her back-whether she likes it or not. Suddenly Meredith finds herself a pawn in her dreaded aunt’s plans. The job that awaits her: enjoy the constant company of the most beautiful immortal men in the world. The reward: the crown-and the opportunity to continue to live. The penalty for failure: death.
With a Laurell K. Hamilton novel, you never know what to expect. You either love it or don’t like it at all, I haven’t ever found middle ground with an LKH novel. I did not enjoy the first book in the Merry Gentry series, I found it went into way too much detail and introduced way to many characters to start with. LKH always is very detailed, but I found this novel a bit over detailed, more detail less action.
I won’t touch on the sex aspect of A Kiss of Shadows, because if you pick up an LKH novel you know the sexuality isn’t always going to be one on one and in this case Merry can sleep with any number of men so long as one of them gets her pregnant.
Maybe the rest of the books in the series are an easier read then this one, but it took me way to long to read and I feel like nothing really progressed. Cal, Merry’s cousin, through-out the book targets Merry with a series of events that should have killed her. But by the end of the book, Cal is just going into punishment. It just moved too slow for my liking, nothing like the pace of an Anita Blake novel.
I might try the second book in the series, but I think I will just be sticking to the Anita Blake Series.
