First I want to let you all know that the 13 Wicked Days of Christmas IS OVER. It ended Christmas Day, so to those still entering, sorry you missed it.
- The Globe & Mail has an excellent article about E-Books vs Print
- Speaking of publishing, this article thinks it’s the end of book publishing as we know it
Is it just me or are a lot of Urban Fantasy & Paranormal Romance books in 2009, way serious? All I can hear is Why So Serious on repeat in my brain. I had this convo with someone earlier this week, after reading Dakota Cassidy’s Accidentally Demonic, I realized a lot of what I have read in 2009 is extremly serious and light on the funny. When I got into PR, I started with MaryJanice Davidson & fell in love with the funny aspect. For a time after, it was like every book out there was funny but that’s changed in my humble opinion!
Can someone, anyone BRING BACK MY FUNNY!?!
I was in such a rut after Dakota’s book because she reminded me what I missed most SNARK, that I turned to her for recommendations for some funny. She pointed me in the direction of Susan Elizabeth Phillips, not PR at all but I have gotten through 6 of her books in the past 10 days and I am in love. She also recommended some time travel romance books that I was shocked to find I actually liked and cackled out loud at!
I also turned to Mark Henry and picked up some of his recommendations too, again not PR or UF! I got my funny back, now I think I can tackle the rest of my UF & PR again! I hope 2010 brings back the funny, which I am sure it will with Jaye Wells, Dakota Cassidy, Mark Henry, Marta Acosta & Nicole Peeler’s upcoming releases. I need some snark with my funny. I love me some serious, but I think I had enough last year to last me a few months!

I love when a book makes me laugh out loud. Sometimes an Urban Fantasy book will do that, but they are getting very serious. Some books go too far in trying to be funny- then it just feels forced. It’s probably hard to strike just the right balance. Mary Janice Davidson’s books are funny, especially her Betsy books, but the last few books of her I read had a little too much screaming in them. It seemed like the main woman was always yelling, whether she was a mermaid, vampire, werewolf, or whatever. Yelling isn’t funny all the time.
I’ve read a little of Susan Elizabeth Philips. They were nice books. I haven’t tried Dakota Cassidy yet. I want to. Her interviews are hella funny.
OMG you must read Dakota, she is hysterical! And I agree on MJD, her books have changed a lot!
It’s not so much PR, but more fantasy. If you see anything by Terry Prachett, especially the disc world series, check them out. The Grim Reaper is usually the main character and he is so funny. I usually am in tears from laughing whenever I read those books.
Email me about them! Cause I know I will forget to add them to my list! And you have to pick up Mark Henry, you’d love him our kinda gritty dirty snarky humor!
Try Diana Laurence and also Angie Fox, they are fun reads and also make you laugh out loud. I too have read entirely too many serious books in my favorite UF or PNR book series that have been following the last few years and something lighter makes me appreciate them when go back to the authors that I normally read….
Happy New Year Pixie, may 2010 bring you all the blessings not given in 2009!!!!!
