WLP Wants To Know: Recommendations

For the most part, I am pretty adept at picking books out that I end up loving. I picked up MaryJanice Davidson in a bargain bin and haven’t looked back since. But, I love nothing more than getting a ton of recommendations at once so I can go nutty in the bookstore and blame others for the amount of money I spent.

Tonight my evil twin KindleVixen just happened to be around when I went online “browsing” at The Book Depository. In less the 1 second, I had bought 2 books because she said I’d love them. If I don’t, she’s eating both books (Rachel Vincent Stray Series). I’m kind of having a bad streak of books right now, I need something that will keep me up all night.

So I want to know, What Should I Read? I’m not talking popular new releases here, I do that all the time. I want hidden jewels, books that aren’t on my shelf.

WLP Wants To Know WTF Should I Be Reading?!

      • Ruthann February 16, 2010 at 10:31 pm

The Snake Agent was a good and interesting read. Kind of a different take on demons and involved some eastern ideas.

  • Fiction Vixen February 16, 2010 at 12:13 am

I just read Shift, 5th book in RV’s series and omg, so good!! So good. What MJD series do you like. I loved her Undead series.

    • Wicked Lil Pixie February 16, 2010 at 12:14 am

I own every MJD book, aside from her series with her husband which I couldn’t stand. I’m a hardcore MJD fan, Hardcovers and all!

      • Fiction Vixen February 16, 2010 at 12:16 am

        What’s the husband series?

I know, it does that and I have NO idea why cause it shows normally.

I read her blog today about the groomers? LMFAO! I really want to meet her, she sounds hilarious!

              • Fiction Vixen February 16, 2010 at 12:24 am

Yeah the groomer. Her sense of humor is great and it comes through loud and clear in her writing. mmm, I feel like some Sinclair. I miss him. )

Oh yeah, your evil twin talked me into Lora Leigh’s Men Of August series. I bought book one tonight. I’m not even into chapter 1 yet and can’t breath. S.M.U.T. KV is evil, pure evil.

    • Wicked Lil Pixie February 16, 2010 at 12:16 am

She’s awful and she reads too damn slow. LOL

      *runs*

      • kindlevixen February 16, 2010 at 12:30 pm

I am going to kick both your asses.

  • Alicia February 16, 2010 at 3:32 am

I just read Elphame’s Choice by P.C. Cast! I loved it and cant wait to buy the next one! I will have to make a trip to Target or maybe look on ebay lol

  • Alicia February 16, 2010 at 3:33 am

Oh and I am a sucker for ANY Bertrice Small books! I am about to start one of hers now ♥

  • The Mighty Buzzard February 16, 2010 at 6:39 am

Whew… this could take a while… Series books only because oneshots would take too much space. Also only including the ones that I dig on enough to make sure I’m always current; not even all of those.

    UF
Jim Butcher – Dresden Files series
Kim Harrison – The Hollows series
Simon R Green – The Nightside series
Mark Del Franco – Conner Grey series
    Rob Thurman – Nightlife series
Charlie Huston – Joe Pitt series
CE Murphy – The Walker Papers series
Rachel Caine – Morganville Vampires series
Yasmine Galenorn – Sisters of the Moon series
Keri Arthur – Riley Jenson series
Vicki Pettersson – Signs of the Zodiac series

    CF
Carrie Vaughn – Kitty Norville series
Rachel Vincent – Shifters series and Soul Screamers series
Karen Chance – Dorina Basarab series and Cassandra Palmer series
Mary Janice Davidson – the Undead series and the Jennifer Scales(YA) series

Gerry Bartlett – Real Vampires series

    OMGWTFBBQ
Laurell K Hamilton – Anita Blake series
(Laurell gets her own category because she’s just all over the damn place.)

There’s bound to be something in there you haven’t read, though they’re not all equally good by any means. I’m Pretty happy I picked up Charlie Huston’s series this past week. You get tired of vampires being all tormented/angsty/downright emo all the time, ya know? Nice to see some quality evil out of them every now and then. I mean really, what’s the point of being a vampire if Gargamel off of the Smurfs is scarier than you?

    • Wicked Lil Pixie February 16, 2010 at 11:03 am

LMFAO I knew you’d give me a good list! I’ve read

      All Charlaine Harris’ series
      Michelle Bardsley
      Richelle Mead (VA series)
Julie Kenner (she has a new series out BTW)
      MJD
      LKH
      Carrie Vaughn
      Just bought Rachel Vincent
      Kerri Arthur
      Kim Harrison

Rob Thurman is my next series to buy, she’s hilarious on Twitter!

    • kindlevixen February 16, 2010 at 12:32 pm

what is CF? and I endorse all of the above lol.

      • The Mighty Buzzard February 16, 2010 at 4:22 pm

Contemporary fantasy. Same as urban fantasy but without the urban requirement.

  • hagelrat February 16, 2010 at 7:51 am

If you fancy a bit of a thriller Silver by Steven Savile is absolutely freaking awesome and will definitely keep you up all night, a bit more of a sci fi twist on a thriller is The World House by Guy Adams.
Fantasy Wise you can’t go wrong with Nights of Viljamur if you haven’t read it yet, Mark Charan Newton. Those three are all gripping late nighters.

    • Wicked Lil Pixie February 16, 2010 at 10:58 am

Someone was just talking about Silver and I can’t for the life of me remember who!

  • Christy February 16, 2010 at 8:35 am

Hey toots, have you read Jeanine Frosts “night huntress” series??? I just started them. I read a book called “First drop of Crimson” which is an off shoot of the huntress series. I loved it

    • Wicked Lil Pixie February 16, 2010 at 11:00 am

Umm Christy…take a glace at the upcoming author interviews. I was all over First Drop, I love Jeaniene! lol

      • Christy February 16, 2010 at 1:16 pm

Ok, ok, so i’m a little slow on the uptake, gimmie a break. I are BLONDE.
        Love ya babe

        • Wicked Lil Pixie February 16, 2010 at 1:17 pm

LMAO I noticed! Love you too!

          • Christy February 16, 2010 at 1:24 pm

yea, but ya would be bored without my AWESOMEST BLONDNESS !

  • MindyLou February 16, 2010 at 8:43 am

I’m not sure if it qualifies as a popular new release so ignore this if it does :) Gail Carriger’s Soulless is spectacular!!!! I became completely absorbed in it on holiday and could barely get into anything I read after. It has to be my absolute new favourite series in the last year. I cannot wait for the second and third books, which I believe are both being released this year!!

    • Wicked Lil Pixie February 16, 2010 at 11:01 am

I really am meaning to pick that up! Isn’t the second book out in March?

      • Mindy February 16, 2010 at 11:33 am

April I think and the third in September :) You won’t regret it!! Apparently
it’s in the “Steampunk” genre; Have you heard of that before? I haven’t but
it’s opened up a whole whack of new search options for me, hehe!

        • Wicked Lil Pixie February 16, 2010 at 11:51 am

Yes, I’ve heard all about the SteamPunk. I just finished Katie MacAlister’s Steamed. You MUST read Boneshaker by Cherie Priest!

          • Mindy February 16, 2010 at 12:13 pm

Thanks for the recommendation, it sounds great, I’ll pick it up right away!

            • Wicked Lil Pixie February 16, 2010 at 12:17 pm

              No problem!

              • Ruthann February 16, 2010 at 10:38 pm

Soulless was awesome and second that suggestion
(along with a great many others you’ve gotten).

I Boneshaker on my TBR stack.

  • Jennifer February 16, 2010 at 10:31 am

I picked up Sunshine by Robin McKinley and was surprised by it. Not your typical urban fantasy. Of Saints and Shadows by Christopher Golden is pretty good too. Um . . . The Succubus series by Richelle Mead is good but I’m still on the fence about the Dark Swan series (it’s good but reminds me of another story, only better).

  • Patti February 16, 2010 at 11:32 am

First – I love Rachel Vincent’s shifters and I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. I also loved First Drop of Crimson (although I think we’re in the minority judging from what I’ve read around the blogosphere).

You’ve gotten so many recommendations, I’ll second:
    Richelle Mead’s Succubus Series
    Patricia Briggs Mercy Thompson Series

Also, Kelly Armstrong’s Otherworld series – start with Bitten (Clay is swoon-worthy). There are like 8 or 9 books in the series; my favorites are the Elena books but the other books are connected so it’s good to read them all.

Great post – I’ve found some new series from answers here that I’m going to investigate!

    • Wicked Lil Pixie February 16, 2010 at 11:53 am

I’m a Toronto girl, I’ve read EVERYTHING by Kelley. I met her in August :)

  • Melissa February 16, 2010 at 4:22 pm

Some I’ve read recently that I’ve LOVED ~~ Dangerous Highlander by Donna Grant, Moon Craving by Lucy Monroe, ALL the Lara Adrian books…these are just a few, but OMG, they’re ALL keeprs, and I’m dying for the next in each series!!

    • Wicked Lil Pixie February 16, 2010 at 6:09 pm

I’ve tried Lara Adrian and I wasn’t a big fan..alas I have the series so I’m going to keep going when I get some of my TBR cleared!

  • Christy February 16, 2010 at 4:26 pm

Oooh have you read GA Aikens Dragon series? There are 3 of them and they are funny. Shelley Laurenston is also really funny.

  • Ruthann February 16, 2010 at 10:48 pm

For a little different variety of suggestions:

    Paranormal Suspense/Thriller
    F. Paul Wilson’s Repairman Jack series (first book is The Tomb)

    With a romance twist:
Alicia Dean’s Heart of the Witch

    With a mystery:
    Victoria Laurie’s Ghost Hunter Mysteries
    Juliet Blackwell’s Secondhand Spirits
    Justin Gustainis’ Black Magic Women

    For humor:
    A. Lee Martinez’s Gil’s All Fright Diner
Mike Resnick’s Fables of Tonight series (first book is Stalking the Unicorn)

    Other:
T.A. Pratt’s series (which I can’t remember – but the first book is Blood Engine)

Ta da! Hope you find something to catch your interest. I second the recommendations for Jim Butcher, Liz Williams and Gail Carriger.

  • Ruthann February 16, 2010 at 11:02 pm

I thought of one more paranormal mystery series: Faith Hunter’s Jane Yellowrock books.

  • Mardel February 17, 2010 at 5:48 am

Have you tried Suzanne McLeod? writes the spellcrackers.com series. two so far and working on the third

    1. Sweet Scent of Blood
    2. Cold Kiss of Death
    3. The Bitter Seed of Magic (september 2010)
These books are set in London, England about a fey woman and a London that is dealing with Vampires and Witches. Vampires have come out of the closet, with the help of a huge P.R. help, and Witches are their enemies, though they are at a truce. There are lots of interesting things going on in this series. The main character is pretty cool. I haven’t seen the books in the U.S. though you can find them through The Book Depository or Amazon.UK Worth buying . Way, way better than….LKH

There’s also The Better to Hold You by Alice Sheckley and the sequel, MoonBurn. The better to hold you was a strange book that grew on me, and had a BAM! ending.

  • Ruthann February 17, 2010 at 3:11 pm

    I thought of one more:

Mike Carey’s The Devil You Know (and other books in the Felix Caster books). They are awesome. :)

  • pandora sale May 5, 2011 at 8:50 am

I own every MJD book, aside from her series with her husband which I couldn’t stand. I’m a hardcore MJD fan
