Interview & Contest With Juliana Stone

I am pleased to have author Juliana Stone here for an interview today! Juliana’s first Avon release, His Darkest Hunger is available on March 30th at bookstores everywhere!

WLP: Can you tell us about his darkest hunger?

JS: I think the best way to do this is to let you all read the blurb!

Jaxon Castille: jaguar shifter, warrior, assassin. He has long hungered for the chance to make his former lover, Libby Jamieson, pay for her deadly betrayal. After three long years he’s finally found her. The hunt is over…

But the Libby that he finds is not what he expected. She has no memory of their tumultuous affair; of her treachery; of anything beyond her own name. A shadowy and deadly clan has marked them both for death, and in an instant the game changes: the hunter has become the hunted.

On the run, with the ghosts of their past between them and a dark, desperate hunger quickly reclaiming their bodies and souls, Libby and Jaxon must discover the truth behind the dark forces working against them. Together, they must grab hold of a destiny that has the power to either heal them or destroy them.

But the truth is far more shattering than anyone could imagine…

WLP: What made you make Jaxon a jaguar shifter?

JS: This is an interesting question.  When I first decided to give this writing thing a try, I had ideas for a vamp series.  I wrote a proposal and sent it off…it was rejected in two weeks.  So, I decided that I needed to come up with something new.  One of my favourite books by Christine Feehan is Wild Rain.  It featured Leopard people…so the seed was planted.  I did some research and came across references to Jaguar Warriors, an ancient Aztec warrior clan and ran with it!  There is something very sensual, sexy about a black, powerful feline.  I love my jags.

WLP: What is your favourite element of the story?

JS: I think in this first story, it’s the relationship between Jaxon and Libby.  They have so much baggage, mistrust and pain between the two of them and yet, they are totally meant to be together.  I loved bridging the gap and allowing them to heal in order to come together.  Of course the whole paranormal thing is wonderful.  I also have a vampire, Ana and a Sorcerer Declan who is quite yummy as well….not to mention Jaxon’s sexy brothers….

WLP: Is there anything you haven’t been asked in an interview that you wished you had been asked?

JS: At this point I’d have to say no.  I’m so new to all of this that any question kinda rocks as I’m just happy people are interested enough to ask!

WLP: How do you get ready to write a love scene?

JS: I approach writing love scenes the same way I do the rest of the book.  When I write I need total silence.  I might listen to music leading up to writing, if I want to get into a certain frame of mind, but for the most part I need silence.  I think this is because I’m such a visual writer….I see the scene in my head and then put it on paper.

WLP: Do you listen to music while you write? If so what?

JS: LOL, I guess I just kinda answered this question.  I will listen to certain songs to get into a specific frame of mind…I remember writing a melancholy scene and listening to “I’m with You” by Avril Lavigne.  I find that song so wistful, full of yearning and it totally got me to where I needed to be.

WLP: Speaking of music, I know that you used to front an all female rock band! Can you tell us a bit about that?

JS: Well, that was a long time ago and an amazing experience for me as a young adult.  I’ve always been attracted to the arts, music and words, and singing is something I totally love.  We hit the road and were unique because we were all female.  There wasn’t anything like that touring when we were.  It was a lot of fun, I travelled to many small and large towns, cities and met a ton of people.  I’ve been stranded in Quebec City when the bar we were at was shut down for drug violations.  That was scary the cops came in and raided the place, (we were clean but the patrons…not so much) and we were stuck with no money for an entire week very far from home.  But you learn to deal.

WLP: Have you done anything special for yourself because this is the first Avon release for you?

JS: We did huge celebrating when I sold, which was a year and half ago.  I mean, I literally decided to write a book, wrote it in 7 weeks, snagged a wonderful agent and she sold it in under 2 months.  I was thrilled….felt incredibly blessed because I know that it can take months and years for that first sale.  Just having an agent doesn’t guarantee a sale (though mine totally rocks)  So yeah, big celebration….but with the release on coming up March 30th I think I might be having a spa day!

WLP: Name 3 things you couldn’t live without

Family

Music

Books

WLP: I know you love your wine, so what is your favourite brand?

JS: Right now I’m really wine from Argentina, Gato Negro is yummy.  I also like Open which is an Ontario VQA wine, it’s a cab/merlot.  Red is the way to go baby!

Thanks again Juliana for stopping by, I for one can’t wait to get my hands on a copy of His Darkest Hunger and search google for 90′s band girl Juliana pictures! Ha. You can always visit Juliana on her website.

Juliana is giving away a copy of His Darkest Hunger to one lucky winner….contest ends Friday March 19th at 11:59pm EST.

I love shifters because they bring so many unique elements to their characters and therefore the books. I also like the wild untamed quality of the characters. They tend to be very honest and true. Without the falsehoods of normal society.

Good interview, N and congrats to Juliana!

  • SandyG March 15, 2010 at 11:12 am

I like shifters because there are so many possibilities when authors
    use different animals.

  • Anna Shah Hoque March 15, 2010 at 11:16 am

I love shifter romances because it just brings in another whole new aspect to the reading experience. I love the variety of shifters…their strength, brutality, code of honour…There’s something incredibly sexy about them…they just naturally exude a sensuality that’s based in nature.

  • Raelena March 15, 2010 at 11:26 am

    I love the cover!
I like shifters because there are so many things they can be. It is also interesting to see more than one side to a person :)

  • Kara March 15, 2010 at 11:31 am

Shifters are my favorite…especially jaguars. They are so territorial, protective, so alpha male!! I could just imagine some 6’2″ perfectly built hunk of a man turn into a sleek, powerful jaguar…they are just so sexy!!

  • Heather (DarklyReading) March 15, 2010 at 11:48 am

I love shifters cause there’s ussally something primal about them..I guess I like a little of the caveman aspect of your my mate I will protect you..

  • Jeanette Juan March 15, 2010 at 12:00 pm

I love shifters because they’re sexy, strong, wild, and really hot! Acting as a dominant alpha is definitely a turn on.

You just had to post a difficult question during daylight savings. Shifter males are the ultimate Alphas and I can’t help but really really really like that. They also like to have the sexy time, a lot. Also a win win.

PS don’t enter me please I just wanted to come on your blog and comment ;)

  • Marianna G. March 15, 2010 at 1:31 pm

Shifters are fun because authors are more likely to stray from conventions and set standards. Plus, I find it cool guessing what characters change into, if that info isn’t given initially. I never guess right though. Haha.

  • Robin Priddy March 15, 2010 at 2:07 pm

I love shifters because it would be so great to change into an animal. To be able to run free and wild,or to take off and fly. I have your book on my to be brought list. Can’t wait to get ahold of it.

  • Moonsanity (Brenda H.) March 15, 2010 at 5:13 pm

I love shifter books, so I will have to get this one even if I don’t win:) The cover is awesome too. I actually like shifters better than vamps. I like the interaction between members of the pack, and I really love the Alpha concept too. I find the pack mentality fascinating.

  • Carolyn Crane March 15, 2010 at 5:22 pm

Wow, I am so impressed you wrote this so fast! What a cool thing, and a great interview! I love the idea of amnesia here.

  • Tawania Etheridge March 15, 2010 at 5:27 pm

Great interview! It’s funny that you mentioned Christine Feehan’s book Wild Rain, That is the first Paranormal book I read, and it was reading that book that got me hooked on Paranormal Romances. I Love shifter books I guess, because I have always been intrigued with werewolves. I think it’s amazing that a person can turn into an animal, and run free. that thought is very appealing to me.

  • Chelsea B. March 15, 2010 at 6:27 pm

Great interview! I can’t wait to read this book! And do I like shifters? Um, no….I love them! :-)

  • Barb P March 15, 2010 at 6:27 pm

Fantastic interview! In answer to the question,” what do I like about shifters? ” my answer is, what is there not to like! In my mind, shifters are smart, strong, and sexy, plus they can turn into an animal. What more could you ask for? I’ve been looking forward to reading Jaxon & Libby’s story for quite a while now, and it is on my TBB list. I can’t wait!

  • Emily March 15, 2010 at 7:10 pm

Great interview and giveaway! I like shifters because those characters tend to be more honest, funny, strong, smart, you name it!

  • Melissa P March 15, 2010 at 7:16 pm

For me, the interesting thing about shifters is how close they are to the beast side of their personality. This lends some suspense to their actions and motives and makes them damn sexy too!

  • Chasity March 15, 2010 at 7:22 pm

Wicked good looking book!!=) I’ve just to my TBR!

  • pixie13 March 15, 2010 at 7:48 pm

I like shifters because of the whole man/beast thing. The animal side of their nature is so close to the surface.

  • Joder March 15, 2010 at 7:55 pm

There’s more to them than meets the eye which makes them very exciting. And they can be dangerously super sexy.

  • Bianca F March 15, 2010 at 7:56 pm

if international entrants can win, then count me in,,,
but i like shifters because they have more emotions (and needs) and theres more for an author to write about-especially about their traits, and what type of character they are. The animal side of their nature is different to the norm, and its so beautiful when its written right. Plus, it’d be cool to run at the speed they do, so you can kinda live vicariously through them :)

  • Juliana Stone March 15, 2010 at 9:15 pm

Wow, so many cool comments here! Keep em coming, the contest is open until Friday! And you are all right….shifters of all sorts are incredibly sexy…

  • Donna March 15, 2010 at 9:39 pm

Shifters = versatility! There are so many possibilities and so much complexity. ;)

Very intrigued about a jaguar shifter, since the jaguar is my favorite feline. I definitely would love to read The Darkest Hunger.

  • Cathy M March 16, 2010 at 1:21 pm

I love the fantasy world in a great shifter story. You get alpha heroes that are dangerous and sexy, with fascinating stories about them controlling their inner beast. Shifter stories are all about action and adventure, and with the romance angle, we get to see those animal instincts balanced with love and their need to protect and cherish. Definitely my favorite genre.

Big congrats on your new release, Juliana, I can’t wait to read it.

  • Jackie Burris March 16, 2010 at 2:45 pm

Shifters are sexy, powerful and Dangerous!!! Love to read stories where my main character is a cat and then turns into a human male or female, stories where that beautiful amber eyed wolf becomes this sleek hot male animal on 2 legs. I could go on and on but as you can tell for me it is all about the ability to change, the ability to become what we most admire be it a wolf, a cat, a bird of prey, a dragon or whatever fanciful creature turns us into mush and we start dreaming that “if only that were me”!!!

Waiting impatiently for Jaxon and Libby’s story and thanks for having Juliana in for this wonderful interview into the making of His Darkest Hunger and a small glimpse into an authors life!!

Shifters are alpha, sexy and fun. Honestly what’s not to love? :)

  • Caitlin Usignol March 16, 2010 at 8:53 pm

I love shifters because I like how important the Pack is to them. I love family because it about love, loyalty and safety. I like that shifters can be any animal.

  • Barbara Elness March 17, 2010 at 1:46 am

I like shifters because they’re able to exist in two worlds. They walk among normal humans, who can’t tell that they’re different, and then they can turn into these awesome, powerful, sexy creatures with extraordinary power. It’s great fun to imagine that there could be shifters out there now and we just don’t know it.

  • Judi March 17, 2010 at 4:48 am

Why do I love shifters? Hmm… have you heard of that saying, “The more people/humans I meet, the more I like my dog/cat!” LOL Yup, I agree with it most of the time, especially when it comes to the opposite sex. :D Seriously though, what’s not to love about a strong, sexy, animalistic, charismatic, protective, mates for life alpha male? I would so be on that!

Great interview Twin & Juliana! I’ve been waiting for this book to come out, hurry up March 30th.

  • CrystalGB March 17, 2010 at 11:02 am

I like shifters because they have wild, untamed quality about them. You know that something dangerous is lurking beneath the surface.

  • Diana Owen-Emerson March 17, 2010 at 1:44 pm

Juliana, the blurb has me hooked…can’t wait to read it! I love shifters because they are hot-blooded, strong, sexy and protective. Your book’s cover is beautiful (really love the tattoo!).

  • Julie Swaney March 17, 2010 at 8:43 pm

I like shifters because they get to let the animal out. They are alpha. loyal, and very loving to the mate they pick out.

    This book sounds great!!!

  • Doreen R March 18, 2010 at 1:57 am

Shape Shifters are awesome because they can be whatever. What a trip is must be while shifting.

  • Marsha Lockom March 18, 2010 at 10:16 pm

I like shape shifters or lycans because they must face dilemmas in two worlds, doubling their troubles. Additionally, attempting to have a normal life with non-sifters adds further complications, always fun!

  • Nancye Davis March 18, 2010 at 11:44 pm

Sexy, unpredictable, and strong!! Thanks for the chance!
