When mechanic and shapeshifter Mercy Thompson attempts to return a powerful Fae book she’d previously borrowed in an act of desperation, she finds the bookstore locked up and closed down. It seems the book contains secret knowledge-and the Fae will do just about anything to keep it out of the wrong hands. And if that doesn’t take enough of Mercy’s attention, her friend Samuel is struggling with his wolf side-leaving Mercy to cover for him, lest his own father declare Sam’s life forfeit. All in all, Mercy has had better days. And if she isn’t careful, she might not have many more to live…
In the fifth book of the Mercy series, we find Mercy still trying to come to terms with being mated to Adam and letting him in to her life a little bit at a time. Mercy still isn’t well liked in Adam’s pack and someone is making it even more difficult by coming in between their relationship in a way that Mercy can’t protect herself from.
On top of personal issues with the Pack, Mercy’s friend Phin has left a cryptic voicemail on Tad’s (Zee’s son) answering machine about a book about the Fae he had lent Mercy. The Fae want this book back at any cost, even if it means killing Mercy to get it back.
Then we have Samuel who is struggling with control of his wolf which has Mercy covering for him, lest his father finds out and kills him.
I have to admit, I really didn’t like the Mercy Thomson Series. I’ve read book one and two, as well as the spin-off series. It just didn’t work for me, I don’t know why. When I got this copy, I figured I would have the same reaction. Wrong. I absolutely loved this book, so much so I couldn’t put it down. Mercy has grown a lot since I last read a book featuring her and she’s become more like-able to me. She’s still a kick ass heroine, but now she’s in love and it’s softened her up just enough for me to like her. She’s finally realizing she’s not alone in the World and has a lot of people who would risk their lives for her.
There is so much going on and it’s so action packed, there’s just too much for me even to touch on. Plus, I don’t want to spoil it for any of you, it’s just that good! From Reality TV “stars” to Pack fights for dominance, it’s an epic journey into the life of Mercy. The Pack fight was so detailed, I swore I was in the room watching UFC fight! Mercy and Adam are so great together, it’s nice to see a softer side to them both where they can joke around in the midst of all these struggles going on around them.
Patricia Briggs writing is fantastic in Silver Borne, from World Building to the small details she has left nothing untouched. I am converted, I love Mercy and Silver Borne is one of the best books I’ve read in 2010.
OMG. I can’t wait to read this book. I heart Patricia Briggs
Great review.
Thanks Monica, its so worth the wait!
I am SO jealous that you got to read this early!!
Great review. I was scared to read it initially just because I didn’t want ANYTHING spoiled before I read it. Glad you gave it such a good rating. I don’t think I’ll be able to last til the 30th :’(
I try hard not to spoil anything on an upcoming release, cause I hate reading spoilers
Awesome review! I LOVE this series and Im dying to read this book =)))
It’s a good addition to the series!
You should try the third book, Iron Kissed. That one is pretty intense.
That’s where she gets raped right? I think i’ll pass!
yes, but the book as a whole is pretty good, although it was kind of sad. However, the character dealing with the aftermath was a little more realistic than other books have been about this. I liked Bone Crossed. She deals with a ghost in this one.
Everyone should have a look around, it is out is some places now. I was in a book store on the weekend and was just re-checking the release date and I noticed they had it.
I have read it, it was good. For me it was the best in the series so far! So good.
It shouldn’t be on shelves yet, hmm.
No it shouldn’t but I did not argue with them when the gave it to me. I know a couple of other people that got it too. I don’t know what happened…
It’s not a strict release date, so they go ahead and shelve it. Chapters is brutal for it.
I can’t wait for this book to release! I’ve been waiting to see how things are going for Mercy, and to hear that she’s growing in this book makes me happy.
Dang! I still have not gotten around reading Patricia Briggs– Now I want to! I think I will have to stop reading your blog for a while [until I am done with this semester- LOL] you, my dear, are a bad [meaning good] influence! You make me want to buy even more books and now you are making me feel so behind on reading *glares at school & work… oh I hate hwk* =P Nah… But As soon as I am done with the apparently never ending book pile that is patiently waiting for me on top of my bookshelf, I will get to this series! I can do it, right? Right!! *grin*
*Cover love* Good review btw! ^-^
Add it to your summer series list
A friend told me about Patricia’s books. I JUST finished Iron Kissed. I’m working on Hunting Ground now. I can hardly wait for this new book! It sounds spectacular!
It really was
I can not wait! This is my favorite series.
This book added it to my favorites list!
Wow. It’s really unusual (at least in my experience) for someone to turn into a convert this far into a series after not really liking the first few books. I’m glad you did though! I’ve really enjoyed the series so far and I can’t wait to read Silver Borne!
Bizarre huh? I’ve never had it happen before, I was shocked I liked it as much as I did!

Love. Thank you for not writing spoilers, I would have had to hurt you. Just kidding. (no, really I would have)
Patricia Briggs is one of my favorite authors. I have yet to read something of hers that I didn’t like. She is so talented.
How cool that you enjoyed this installment so much after having been not so keen on the first two! Mercy’s my girl — I’m so looking forward to reading SILVER BORNE. Thanks for the review!
