Guest Blogger: Michele Hauf & Contest

Hey, everyone!  I’m in the midst of a blog tour that takes me to different blogs almost every day, where I’ll be chatting about a different aspect of HER VAMPIRE HUSBAND at each one.  So if interested, check the tour schedule at my blog, and follow me!

I wanted to chat a bit about the heroine and hero of Her Vampire Husband today.  Specifically, their age difference.  When I started writing the story I hadn’t purposely decided to deal with age differences in the plot, in fact the idea of a May/December romance wasn’t even on my radar.  As I got into the story, it just dawned on me one day, the heroine is in her mid to late twenties.  And the hero?  He’s 900 years old.  Whoa.  Now that’s what I call May/December!

The two characters were quite naturally acting their ages too, and I began to notice that the heroine’s youth had a good effect on the hero, who didn’t necessarily act like an old man, but maybe he was beginning to think he was on oldie but a goodie.  Heck, Creed (the hero) looks like a healthy 30 year old.  Vampires age very slowly.  And he’s the physique of an athlete, so I wasn’t worried about physical appearances turning one another off.  And really, once you venture into the paranormal realm, the idea of age really takes a back seat.  Sure, the hero brings centuries of wisdom and experience to the table, but he offers a mature match to a heroine who needs to do a little growing up anyway.

They complimented one another so well.  They taught each other a lot.  And they learned to love, despite being a werewolf and vampire, but never despite their ages.

Tell me what you think about stories involving May/December romances.  Do you think it really applies once you get into the paranormal and a lot of the characters have lived for centuries?

honestly it depends ithink may/dec romances are sexy even in paranormal romances simply because older men younger women are hot that whole senerio works for me no matter what genera parnormal even then the older the more its hot least for me great post

I think may/dec romances are good no matter what.

  • Lisa Richards April 5, 2010 at 9:31 am

It only applies in the paranormals if the December partner hasn’t kept up with the times. And to some extent this is true for non-paranormals, too. I love May/December match-ups, especially if the woman is the December half. This always seems to create more problems. But with the right guy, seems to be especially exciting.

I think this is pretty much a factor in most paranormal/urban fantasy storylines, and it works. I would be interested to see it flipped once in a while. Probably not looking hard enough, though…And I gave you an award…

I think it is a part of paranormal stories and are most of the time always great.

I enjoy May/December romances. It’s fun to see what effects if any the age difference has on the relationship. Once you get into paranormal romance the storyline is normally the guy has already lived for a 100 years and isn’t going to die anytime soon while the female is human and will die at a normal age.

  • Brenda B. Hill April 5, 2010 at 11:29 am

I do believe in May/December romances. I have friends and relatives that had one and they are still together 30 yrs later.

I do love to read books with May/December romances as they are full of interesting tid bits about both and you feel you know them as they rush to the alter.

In paranormanl romance I don’t really like it because if one is human and the other not, death will take the human and the survivor will be alone for decades.. If both are paranormal then it might work. Having the same spouse for thousands of years just doesn’t seem possible. LOL

I love that every is pretty accepting of the May/December romances! And yes, I would definitely like to see more that feature the woman as the older of the couple. But seriously, we don’t want the guy too young. Young ones are cute, but do they really know how to take care of we women? :-)

      hahahaha!!!
      I am inclined to agree!

The best advice I offer single woman who are looking to settle down is: “Only consider settling down with men who have been out of mommies house for a couple years minimum.”
If not, we tend to take over moms duties… or least some men seem to think we will!!=)

I never really thougth about May/ December romances in the paranormal genre. But I guess it does apply. It has a lot to do with experiences. And those who have been around longer have had more experience.

  • Saranna DeWylde April 5, 2010 at 1:18 pm

I think that the age difference is totally relevant in the paranormal genre. How can you expect someone who’s lived through so much not to be changed by everything they’ve seen in the world? I think it ages their souls too. That sounds a bit overdramatic, but when you watch humanity screw itself time and time again, that has to make an impression.

Someone who’s seen that much will certainly have a much different view of the world than someone in their twenties. Even in my thirties, I see the world much differently than I did when I was in my twenties.

I’m a bit daft today. I have no idea what happens in May that makes romances big. As for December, my family has never been big into Christmas, so those types of novels don’t attract my attention. I only buy holiday themed books if it features one of my fave writers. What time of year the novel comes out doesn’t matter to me–the sooner the better.

    • Wicked Lil Pixie April 5, 2010 at 6:50 pm

Might want to read the post, it states what may/december romances are.

      • Reena Jacobs April 6, 2010 at 4:04 pm

Like I said, daft. Two plus plus two is about five. No way I can redeem myself from that goof. Oh well. I was cruising websites and found a description of May/December romances.

Age differences, in my opinion, matter less the older the couple is, including paranormal couples. 400 yo with a 1000 yo, by then I’d think they’d stop counting. 18 yo with 300 yo, there’s a wealth of experience the younger lacks, just adding a decade would make a world of difference.

I think that may/december romances probably factor even more in paranormal romances since one partner is usually much older than the other.

  • Miranda April 5, 2010 at 2:00 pm

I am MORE than willing to allow a younger man to TRY and take care of me… but then again I am a sucker for a baby face.

The May/Dec romance thing applies to paranormal especially when someone is thinking of someone else like a kid… then it gets interesting and dramatic and feelings get hurt. And you see if experience trumps determination and youthful vigor.

  • Lisa Richards April 5, 2010 at 3:44 pm

If the guy’s the May, it’s okay. We just don’t want a March guy( to young). I just love to watch the interaction of the couple if the Woman is the older one. They always seem to be much more unsure of themselves when it comes to accepting the fact that a guy 10 or 15 years younger( or if a paranormal 100 years younger) could actually find them attractive and willing to settle down with them. We need the guy to be mature and sure of himself.

I think once you get into reading paranormal romance, 900 years between the hero and heroine doesn’t even make you blink!
I can’t wait to read Her Vampire Husband!

  • Michele hauf April 5, 2010 at 7:20 pm

Who mentioned March? Never heard that one! So that means the chick is robbing the cradle? ;-)

I Do not think it applies in a Paranormal Book just one would hope the paranormal person acts a little wiser then the person that has not been around so long.

In a Paranormal Romance the May/December age difference does not apply as one partner is going to be older than the other. I just picked up Her Vampire Husband today and can’t wait to curl up with it tonight. I LOVE your books.

  • Raelena April 7, 2010 at 12:07 am

In a paranormal Romance the May/December thing doesn’t really apply unless it is physically obvious

  • kisah jackson April 7, 2010 at 1:33 pm

i would think it must apply to some degree, even if the older party has “kept up with the times”, simply because of the wealth of history that he/she has been through. as long as there are no “when i was your age” fights, though…..

I think it can be mildly creepy. Creepy because what would an old-y want w/ a perky young thang with no worldly experience? “I want you for your mind!” But I never really believe that 2000 yr old vamps are really their age, they don’t act it.

  • Chas April 9, 2010 at 2:34 am

    Yummmm…. I love a man with facial hair!!=) gruffy!!

  • Barbara Elness April 9, 2010 at 7:04 pm

I think once you get into the paranormal and are dealing with a being that is hundreds of years old, the age difference isn’t really an issue, as long as they are attracted to each other otherwise.

  • Jennifer M. April 11, 2010 at 5:03 pm

Yeah, once you have a person of a supernatural persuasion that’s hundreds of years older than pretty much everybody they come into contact with it stops mattering. I mean there comes a point when said person is going to be robbing the cradle no matter what they do.

  • Tessa April 12, 2010 at 3:29 pm

Love is love, whether it’s May/December or not! It’s all good…

  • Tracy B April 12, 2010 at 3:37 pm

I think that the relationships with older// sometimes much older men vs women are exciting to read, only if the man is caring and really pays attention to the womens needs and wants. I think that each one can teach the other something about love, romance and intimacy… BTW, Loved Her Vampire Husband, waiting for the next……

  • Tristan H. April 12, 2010 at 4:03 pm

I think for a reader like me, happily ever after (with tons of lust-driven love-making mixed in) is the story I can sink my teeth into. And on top of that, I think that (tongue in cheek) it takes a man to live for centuries to be mature enough and to be starved enough of real mated love enough to actually become the individuals given over to the emotion commitment that most of the characters make.
