ONE UNLUCKY THIEF. ONE UNLIKELY GENIE. ONE VERY ODD COUPLE.
Gavyn Donatti is the world’s unluckiest thief. Just ask all the partners he’s lost over the years. And when he misplaces an irreplaceable item he was hired to steal for his ruthless employer, Trevor—well, his latest bungle just might be his last. But then his luck finally turns: right when Trevor’s thugs have him cornered, a djinn, otherwise known as a genie, appears to save him.
Unfortunately, this genie—who goes by the very non-magical name of “Ian”—is more Hellboy than dream girl. An overgrown and extremely surly man who seems to hate Donatti on the spot, he may call Donatti master, but he isn’t interested in granting three wishes. He informs Donatti that he is bound to help the thief fulfill his life’s purpose, and then he will be free. The problem is that neither Donatti nor Ian has any idea what exactly that purpose is.
At first Donatti’s too concerned with his own survival to look a gift genie in the mouth, but when his ex-girlfriend Jazz and her young son get drawn into the crossfire, the stakes skyrocket. And when Ian reveals that he has an agenda of his own—with both Donatti and the murderous Trevor at the center of it—Donatti will have to become the man he never knew he could be, or the entire world could pay the price. . . .
Gavyn is a sad excuse for a thief, things tend to go wrong even the simplest task like stealing a knife and delivering it to a big baddie, Trevor. You see, Gavyn can get away and it seems he can make people not see him…which doesn’t help when he looses the knife. That’s right, our hero looses the knife he stole. Now he’s got Trevor after him, along with a Bounty Hunter & a ton of thugs. Just when Gavyn is about to die, a mysterious man takes the bullet meant for him.
Ian is a Genie aka dijinn and he needs Gavyn’s help, even if Ian is one cranky Dijinn who demands help but doesn’t offer up the why’s. Add is Gavyn’s ex-girlfriend & former thief partner, another thief Gavyn damn near killed and another Dijinn and we’ve got our group out to save the world.
Sonya Batemen’s debut novel is full of adventure, sarcasm and a whole lot of funny! When I wasn’t laughing at the poor excuse of a thief Gavyn, I was rooting for him and his eclectic group of “friends”.
Gavyn tells the story, which is rare in Urban Fantasy where we are used to woman being the story tellers not the men, which made this such a refreshing read! What I loved most about Gavyn’s POV is that he is so self deprecating, he knows he screws up all the time & laughs it off, even when it constantly almost kills him. Ian on the other hand is so cranky that you can’t help but love him, especially when you find out why he’s so cranky. Ian’s had a hard life, a real lonnnnng life at that.
Then there is Jazz & let me tell you how excited I was when I read that Jazz was bi-racial, though it really doesn’t do anything for the story it was really nice to have a character that was like me. *snort* The relationship between Gavyn and Jazz is a different kind than the norm, you can feel that they still have strong feelings for each-other through-out the book. Not a lot of romance though, so don’t expect it. But the storyline is incredibly fast paced and they’re on the run for the entire book which makes for an interesting read, you won’t want to put the book down. You’ll also hate Trevor almost as much as Gavyn does, he is one of the most evil character’s I have read about, so much so I wanted to go through the book and beat him myself!
