Long ago, Susan Rodriguez was Harry Dresden’s lover-until she was attacked by his enemies, leaving her torn between her own humanity and the bloodlust of the vampiric Red Court. Susan then disappeared to South America, where she could fight both her savage gift and those who cursed her with it. Now Arianna Ortega, Duchess of the Red Court, has discovered a secret Susan has long kept, and she plans to use it-against Harry. To prevail this time, he may have no choice but to embrace the raging fury of his own untapped dark power. Because Harry’s not fighting to save the world… He’s fighting to save his “child.”
There’s really not much I can say about Changes that isn’t already in the back cover blurb, or this review would contain some spoilers.
Harry has a daughter (Maggie) that he had no idea about with his ex-girlfriend Susan, he’s surprised & angry that she hid Maggie from him. But Harry doesn’t have time to be angry with Susan, since Maggie has been kidnapped by the Red Vampire’s & time is running out to save her from what they have planned.
Prior to starting Changes, I had only read the first book in the series Storm Front. I was told by numerous people I wouldn’t “get it”, I’d be lost, I wouldn’t catch the underlying issues. To them I say, pfft.
If you can catch a plot-line/underlying issues/tension, all you need to read is book one and maybe book two (Changes is the 12th book in the series). Just so you’ll understand the different Courts & Councils, Butcher writes in a way that you catch on quickly. That said, I will go back & read the rest of the series now that I’ve finished with Changes. Since there may be some threads I missed, though it didn’t distract or take anything from the book in my opinion. Yes, there are characters & previous issues mentioned but it’s not too hard to understand.
Suffice to say, Changes is non-stop drama & action. Harry is really put through the ringer, most people would just lay down & die, but not Harry he keeps pushing no matter the cost. Some of the costs are extremly high & life changing. He’ll do anything to save his little girl! There are all sorts of plot twists & turns, especially in the last half of the book where I couldn’t put it down until I hit the last page. Speaking of the last pages, whoa, what a cliff hanger Mr. Butcher.
Now excuse me, while I go back & read the rest of the series. Maybe I’ll even re-review Changes & see if the previous books have left me with a better understanding. But honestly, Changes works for old fans & WILL work for new fans, you’ll just want to go back but you won’t get too lost.
Did you pickup the whole series?
Nah just the first 3 and the last now.
I luvs me some Harry. Wonderful review. Sooooo, Susan is a vamp now? How cool. I just finished his 3rd one and and abt to get the 4th. Your right. Read the first 2 and you can pretty much pick up anywhere after that. But if I read in order then he’ll always be a yr or 2 ahead of me and I won’t have to wait for new releases with him.
Exactly! Thats how I started Sherrilyn Kenyon, smack in the middle and went OH I love her! lol
I have only read the first book in the Dresden series. I thought it was ok but wasn’t blown away by it. But since I’ve been blogging and twittering I’ve heard SO many peeps say how good it is. So for that reason I will probably re-read book1 and finish the series. Thanks for the review!
