Vampire musician Michael Glass has attracted the attention of a big- time producer who wants to cut a demo and play some gigs-which means Michael will have to enter the human world. For this, he’s been assigned escorts that include both a dangerous immortal as well as Michael’s all-too-human friends. And with that mix of personalities, this is going to be a road trip from hell…
Kiss of Death is the 8th book in Rachel Caine’s Morganville Vampire Series, in this chapter in the series Michael, Claire, Shane & Eve get a temporary pass to leave Morganville so Michael can record a CD. The catch, they have to have a chaperon…Oliver. When they stop for a bathroom break, Oliver says he has business to attend to & will be back, leaving the gang on their own. Trouble as usual occurs, but it only gets worse when they end up in a small town that is filled to the brim with Vampires. It’s no Morganville that’s for sure & the outside World just may be scarier than Morganville.
Claire, Eve, Michael & Shane end up in a small town that has been overrun by Vampires, ones that Bishop made prior to his final death. These Vamps haven’t had the cure Claire created so they are insane with bloodlust & there aren’t many human town members left. On top of that, Claire had promised Morley she would get him passes to leave Morganville but Ameila denied them which means Claire & the gang have to do something fast because they’re going to become blood donors if they don’t.
While Kiss of Death tied up a few things from previous novels, I felt like it just was the same storyline moved outside of Morganville. No matter where they go Shane, Eve, Michael & Claire end up in some sort of messy situation that results in them fighting for their lives. For the first few pages it seemed like nothing happened, then all sorts of things happened all at once. The end of the book seemed rushed to me, like an “oh yeah, they were going somewhere weren’t they?”
While a fun, suspense/mystery read, Kiss of Death wasn’t my favorite in the series.
