After enduring torture and the loss of loved ones during the brief but deadly Faery War, Sookie Stackhouse is hurt and she’s angry. Just about the only bright spot in her life is the love she thinks she feels for vampire Eric Northman. But he’s under scrutiny by the new Vampire King because of their relationship. And as the political implications of the Shifters coming out are beginning to be felt, Sookie’s connection to the Shreveport pack draws her into the debate. Worst of all, though the door to Faery has been closed, there are still some Fae on the human side-and one of them is angry at Sookie. Very, very angry…
Dead in the Family is the 10th book in the Sookie Stackhouse series.
We learn a lot more about Eric’s background, with an appearance by someone from his past that threatens his relationship with Sookie. On top of that, Eric is still coming to terms with the new vampire king of Lousiana. There are also a lot more of the shifters due to them coming out & the government wanting to make them register as such.
Claude & Sookie develop a relationship since the passing of his sister Claudine has left him trying to feel more human, since he’s stuck on the human side of the fence now that the entry-way to faerie has been closed. All due to the fairy war that killed his sister. He’s trying really hard to be more human & compassionate, but it’s Claude & you know he always has an ulterior motive. There is also one fairy who may have been left behind & he isn’t a fan of Sookie’s. There’s also Bill, who is really struggling after being silver poisoned.
The book is named Dead in the Family for a reason, as family plays a big part in this book. Sookie has changed big time, she’s been through so much & is just trying to get past it all. But it’s made her much stronger & she even has some snark in her.
Honestly, I didn’t remember much at all about the ninth book in the series other than we lost Claudine & that there was a fairy war. So it was refreshing to read Dead in the Family, it was kinda like a restart to the series but it reminded you of what happened & tied up the loose ends from the previous book. But it also sets you up for the next book in the series, something big’s going to go down for sure.
There was even a mention of the True Blood theme song playing in Merlotte’s, which honestly I could have done without. I’d rather the series not move into the TV show, because there are continuity errors in terms of Eric’s maker in this book (if we are following the TV show, he has a different maker). But it was a bit funny to see it mentioned.
I found Dead in the Family lacked the action the previous books had, while there was action it was spread out & quickly resolved in the end. I could have done with some more action. It was kind of like getting little bits of information about all of Sookie’s friends, a bit too much backstory for my liking. Hopefully it’s setting up for the next book in the series. If you haven’t read the series, this is not the book for you. But if you are a fan of the series, this book is kinda the calm before the storm. A nice addition to the series, but it won’t shock you.
This review has given me hope that this book will not suck like the last one and that she can redeem the series. Although even the menion of True Blood and the books intersecting makes me want to hurl and then beat someone. *sigh*
Great review babe!
Thanks Brooke. Yeah I was not happy with the True Blood reference & the two different masters for Eric, but it was much better than the last one.
Well that’s good at least. I’ve been losing my faith in Ms. Harris and it’s been a painful experience…..
I hear ya, but its got Eric, a lot of him at the start!
I’m gonna regret asking this, but did she continue her obvious character assassination of Eric in this one?
Not at all
Woo effing hoo!! Oh, happy days! I’m gonna have to break open my piggy bank and get this one
It’s 9.99 on Amazon!!
I know!! But I have to actually go in and get it
Waaaaaaaaaaa!
Oopsie! Totes meant to reply to Nat there. I’m tired. Give me a break, lol
LOL
I really don’t like hearing that this is more of a “set-up” book since I loved that series started with books that could stand on their own :/ However, I love Eric and the series as a whole so I took tomorrow off work so I can give the book my full attention lol.
Really great review BTW! It made want to read the book without setting my expectations too high.
I agree, Nat did a great job of making me have hope, but more like cautious hope, lol.
I know what you’re saying about it being a set up book, but it’s kinda hard to have a book be the 10th in a series and still have it be a stand alone. I don’t think they’ve been stand alone for some time now, but that’s just my opinion
Yeah this won’t stand on it’s own IMO. There’s too many back characters coming to the forefront & new characters.
Thanks Tara
Thanks for the spoiler-free review, I have hope. That last couple of books it just feels like Harris has lost her mojo, and I’ve been waiting for her to get it back. More Eric? Yes please! It’s good to know that I’ll get more of him but that the book won’t blow me away so my expectations are set accordingly.
I try, it’s still a good book but it’s not a stand alone or a big action filled adventure.

I gotta admit I am not running to the store for this one!
The ending off the last installment I was really PISSED that she still didnt know who she wanted to be with!
“which Vampire?” if I recall correct.
Book 4 is by far my favorite ever. I would like to see more stability in the series. Continuously, people are coming and going. relationships are drastically changing. I think that is why I like Sookie’s roommate. I hope she sticks around.
Anyhow, I requested the book at my library. 111 in line… ugh! I might might buy it but I am going to try to sticvk it out for a borrowed copy.
backstory… ugh! I am not looking forward to the apparent page fillers. There has been some of that in books pass.
I am very curious though to see what progresses btwn Sookie and Eric! Hell, I want the big bad vikuing for myself!!!!

I must admit that I think this series is going on too long… Quality over Quantity!!
@Chasity:
You expressed my feelings exactly. Book 4 AKA The Eric Book was my favorite too. I was with WLP in that I could not remember anything abt book 9, it was completely unmemorable. And the ending? I was soooo disappointed with that, it was something like her great great grandfather told her “the vampire” really loved her and we don’t know who. Thanks Charlaine! I feel the Eric an Bill triad has been dragged on too long, and yet I downloaded the ebook for this on release Tuesday morning
It doesn’t appear C Harris ha any HEA in sight forr Sookie, and the content is just boring me. I’m about 1/3 way through and I’m grateful for this review because ther IS NO action yet and if i’d not known that already I’d be throwing a fit.
Anyway, I want to quit this series, I really do… but I can’t. In summary, don’t go right out and buy this one, ESP not in hardback (I did that for Dead and Gone)…
Quality over Quantity indeed!!!!!!
Shoot… double post! Ugh! What happened.
I added to the second comment post!
I love Sookie S. and I’m really looking forward to this book – it sounds very promising (Sookie is occasionally snarky? – I can’t wait to see that).
Hmm, I didn’t notice the difference in Eric’s maker book vs. series (I guess I wasn’t really paying much attention while Eric was on screen).
Yeaaaah, Godric in the book was a whack-ass creepy guy who “liked kids”, and was not Eric’s Maker but was supremely old and had a death wish for his crimes. We learned more abt Eric’s Maker much later in the book series, but it was not Godric. The show made Godric hot (I thought he was a nice looking young man
) and changed him to Eric’s Maker.
does anyone know if there going to be 11th book, when is it going to come out!
There will be an 11th book, the release I have no idea.
