WLP Gets An E-Reader
May 17, 2010 in Book News, E-Readers
Thursday, the boyfriend & I were Blackberry messaging back & forth about E-Readers.
I had looked at the Sony Reader Pocket Edition last summer & fell in love, but at $249.00 Canadian, it wasn’t happening. Then this month the Kobo E-Reader came out & I was hooked. Boyfriend did all sorts of research (so we thought) & it looked good to go, but he mentioned we’d talk more about it on Friday. Friday comes, boyfriend confesses to wanting to buy me an E-Reader for our anniversary next month but he’d buy it for me now if I wanted it that bad. Off we go to Chapters to check out the Kobo, alas they have not a single Kobo in store anywhere in Toronto, Mississauga or Etobicoke they also haven’t the slightest clue when the next shipment will come in. Hows that for excellent customer service? Someone tweeted me after I ranted about it, to check Walmart…so off we go to Walmart. You have NO idea what it meant to be in a Walmart with my boyfriend, people!! He doesn’t go there under any circumstance, but to take me on a Friday night…whoa. Guess what, no Kobo’s all sold out.
At this point I’m pissed, I’ve waited HOW long for a damn E-Reader & now I can’t have it!!! And then my friend tells me she’s been through not one, but two Kobo’s this month (amazing, they’ve only been out for 9 days at that point) she says the customer service is great but sorry I’m not buying a product that is hard to find & now I’m hearing has all sorts of issues.
Saturday we head to Best Buy & let me tell you we had the most knowledgeable salesman known to man. We were discussing the Sony’s & another lesser known brand that has an LCD screen as opposed to Sony’s E-Ink. The guy refused to sell us the other brand, he said it was a piece of junk. I was shocked, I’ve never been in a store where the person knows their stuff that well. He went on to tell us that company claimed battery life of whatever but it lasted no more than 4 hours & that everyone he’d seen buy one, returned it the next day! Whoa. I was sold on the Sony, it was $169.00 but the boyfriend & I had to discuss it. I said I’d pay for half, because it’s not cheap! More talking commenced, boyfriend googled….
Needless to say, we left with a new toy for Pixie. Ignore my nail polish, I’ve been busy reading.

I love it! It’s so much easier to read than on the computer or the DS. The bookmark feature does something for me, it makes me feel like a bad girl. Are you all going WTF Pix? Well it folds the “page” at the corner & we all know I don’t do that! It gives me a cheap thrill I tell you. It’s said to store 350 books & doesn’t have expandable memory which is perfectly fine with me. I’m never going anywhere that would require me to be carrying over 50 books at one time. It also doesn’t use WiFi to download books, you have to plug it into the computer. I’ve seen people bitch about that, but really if you are up in the air on a plane you can’t grab a book from the sky can you? So what’s the problem? Stock up FIRST.
Overall, I am so happy with it. It’s fast enough on the page flips, I can hold something in one hand & the reader in the other. I can stop & take notes without having to find my bookmark. And NOW I can really review E-Books!
What popped my E-Readers virginity? Stacia Kane’s Unholy Ghosts.
Yep, my boyfriend rules…hope he understands why I’m going to be quiet all this coming long weekend at the cottage…it’s all his fault.

Congratulations! Looks great! I find an ereader makes you read more! Happy reading ;]
Oh no, like I need to read more! LOL
Congrats on your new toy!
Ty Elie!
I have had a Sony for over a year now and I love it. My mom gave it to me for christmas in 08 and I have been a fan since then. I upgraded last year to the new fomat. They have a lighted case (about $50, I think) that is awesome. Best wishes with your new toy. Enjoy!!
So far its been nothing but goodness! Love it!
I am so jealous! I have been wanting an ereader for while but I have been stuck reading on my iphone..ugh. Give us an update later and let us know how you like it after using it for awhile! This is the one I have been seriously considering!
I will do for sure, Stacy check out the open box deals at Best Buy, they’re 30 bucks cheaper that way
My best friend was going to buy me one– but I really don’t want my “ereader virginity to be popped” … at least not yet… =P It feels as if I am cheating on books LOL… Nice nail polish there, perfect for a pixie!
LOL trust me Ale, you’ll want one after you play with one for a day.
I have a sony ereader and love it… it’s so convenient and I always have a ton of books at my fingertips..I even take baths with it
I was thinking about that and had images of me dropping it! LOL
Congrats! I’ve always considered myself a book purest but have recently discovered the benefits of audio books and can now see the possibilities of an e-reader. The KOBO seems to have the best price around but you’re not the first person to mention its issues. And I can totally see how that “dog-earing” feature would feel naughty! I’d never do it to a bound book :-p Enjoy!!
I go to the cottage a lot in the summer, the nearest bookstore is an hour away & it’s an independant that bumps prices at about 40% more than the chain stores. I always pack like 30 books much to the boyfriends dismay, so this is going to make it SOOO much easier to travel. Of course I’ll still have my books with me, but maybe 2 AND the E-Reader
Girl, I bought the same one a year ago, and it stays in my purse, loaded with books! I am a Sony Ereader fanatic!! Congrats!!
LOL Thank god for big purses I tell you!

Congratulations!!! I got a Kindle from Hubby on Mother’s day and I’m crazy loving it!! LONG LIVE EREADERS!!!!
LOL so fast we all change our tunes once we have one
I kind of want to return my kobo and get a sony now!
still having battery issues with it, it never seems to know how much battery life it has and i have to convert all my epub files as it won’t resize the fonts
and most importantly, i don’t have a pretty cover for it!!!
we need to compare them both, i think we need to have another book/ereader date soon!
I would take it back Mim’s & hit Best Buy. I’m home today-thursday, friday I head for the cottage until Monday than back again up there on Friday of next week (I think) Come tomorrow or Wed?
Congrats Nat! I’m still up in the air about buying one, because reading on the computer gives me a migraine, and I don’t know how different a reader would be…I have actually won like 3 e-books and haven’t been able to enjoy them yet!
I’ll get to them eventually!
Have fun and enjoy your new toy!
As long as you don’t get an LCD screened e-reader you are fine, Sony is E-Ink so it looks just like a book and doesn’t hurt your eyes
Reading on a computer and an ereader is completely different, I’ve been reading on my kobo and it’s meant to look like a book, no eye strain
Oh noooooo. You’ve convinced me to get an e-reader. But I want the Kindle
.
DO IT! lol but check out Kindle’s features, because some E-Readers only read specific formats
Congrats!! I got a Sony E-reader too 2 weeks ago from Future Shop and love it.I hate reading on my laptop and figured it was time to get one since they dropped the price a bit.
Isn’t it soo much easier! lol I’m glad they finally price dropped let me tell you!
I just got a pocket Sony recently too! Of course, I couldn’t leave it plain, so I got a skin from decalgirl.com and now I’m in lurve with it!
Returned the Kobo last night and got a Sony, soo much nicer then the Kobo – the Kobo just had a cheap feel to it the button to turn pages wasn’t placed well, my thumb would cramp up during reading and that ugly button is LOUD when you’re reading in the middle of the night with your hubby there beside you trying to sleep, and bitching at you to turn the light off
I’ve read reviews about people complaining the Sony’s are overpriced but for the $50 difference over the Kobo, I think it’s worth it.
Hey Nat,
Now that you have had your Sony for almost a month, have you had any issues with it? I am still on the fence between Sony and Kobo. I see faults in both. I’m more leaning towards Sony but have heard that it doesn’t work well with Windows 7 (which is what I use) and that the program to download the ebooks from does not have a large variety for Canadians. I wanted to know if you experienced a problem finding the books you want to read? Are you able to use other sites to download from?
I’m still new to the whole eBook thing…thanks for any advice you can give.
I love it & I am running Win 7. The variety, I haven’t had an issue at all because you can buy from places other than Sony (FictionWise for example). I know people that are STILL having issues with their Kobo’s. If you are willing to wait for the second generation of Kobo’s, maybe but I’d really say Sony.
