WLP Wants To Know: Real Vampires

For once in my life, I heavily researched a WLP Wants To Know post. You see, I don’t want to offend anyone… Sanguinarian’s (Real Vampires) do exist, and I don’t want to offend them but would like to know what you all think on the subject. Everyone is free to their own opinions, I’ve never censored any of you, but try and be a little respectful if a Sanguinarian does end up here.

First I am going to define Sanguinarian’s (to the best of my knowledge)

  • They are blood drinkers, they consume it through willing donors.
  • Often only 1 or 2 teaspoons worth of blood is taken.
  • There is usually a contract written up by Vampire & Donor beforehand.
  • The term is derived from a Latin word which means bloodthirsty.
  • Some follow the 13 Rules of Community aka (The Black Veil)
  • There are different Vampire’s as well, psi included.
  • Some describe themselves as humans with a compulsion or need to drink blood.

As you can see, there is a ton of information out there and sometimes (most times) it’s hard to decipher what is agreed upon & what isn’t the standard. Some don’t even agree on the spelling of the word Vampire (Vampyre, Vampyr) & some don’t even like using the word Vampire.

In general, what I have found is true across the board is that it all depends on YOUR definition of the word Vampire. My definition would automatically be someone who drinks blood, basic and to the point.

Now here’s the big question, why? WHY? I don’t understand it, I am willing to continue to research, I’d love to interview a member of the Sanguinarian Community just out of basic curiosity & to try to understand more. I’ve been researching this on & off for months now, my few questions have turned into a ton of them.

Now after all that is said & done, WLP Wants To Know a few things:

  • What do you define as a Vampire?
  • What is your take on Blood Drinkers?
  • Why is it fine to read a book about it, but most of us are disturbed thinking real people do this?

Cause that’s Pixie, always wanting to know.

I’d say my basic definition of a vampire would be someone who needs blood for survival. However, I do love when authors mix up the other elements of the mythology.

I’m not sure how I feel about real vampires. I’m actually going to NOLA (for the first time!) with some friends that are going to a mainly vampire LARP convention and I’m VERY curious to see what it’s all about (because it’s not something I’m personally involved with).

I think part of the thrill of reading is that we can desire things that we wouldn’t want in the real world. Most of the books I read that involve vampires make blood exchange sexy and powerful, while in real life drinking blood seems much less magical :/

Bear in mind the following is tempered by as much tact as I could manage due to your specific request.

Vampire – Fictional, bloodsucking, non-sparkly, undead creature with pointy toofs and a really lousy tan.

Real Vampire® – Ironic naming for a wannabe vampire. It’s like Punk vs. Emo: if there’s no way anyone is ever going to take your pansy ass seriously as a real vampire, be a Real Vampire® instead!

This shit is what happens when you let a lot of people with a severely low self-esteem all hook up together into one giant Voltron of stupidity. It’s a last-ditch effort to have anyone finally give them some attention and see them as special.

Their drinking blood doesn’t disturb me. I’m quite used to seeing human insecurity and desperation played out. Look at it this way, at least it gives Emo kids and adult Twilight fans someone to mock.

There was this couple profiled back in the 1990′s by the Twin Cities Reader, or maybe the City Pages, where the guy channelled Vlad the impaler to have sex with his GF, and I think he drank blood, too. They had this whole intense vampire lifestyle. Really into it! My favorite detail was that they also had a life-sized statue of Boy George at the foot of their stairs.

I have to agree with the Mighty Buzzard here, this just screams “attention whore!” And everyone knows that any attention is good attention for people like that. Whether you are praising them for thinking outside the box, or condemning them for being freaks, you are still giving them the attention they crave. I know someone who is a huge attention whore, who regularly spews ignorance from their mouth any chance they get. At parties, weddings, whatever, anything to start an argument and get attention (usually bad). THAT pisses me off. This, I can deal with, as long as they keep the blood far away from me. Interesting post! And I have no good answer for you as to why this skeezes me out, but vamps in books are sexy as hell. I think it has something to do with our brain automatically filtering the images we form in our heads. Like, maybe my mind’s eye sees blood as pink, sparkly and bubble gum flavored when a vamp is drinking it, therefore it’s appealing. LOL

I’m with The Mighty Buzzard, for the most part – every Real Vampire® I’ve met has been an extreme sort of emo. Not saying there isn’t one out there that might have a valid set of reasoning I can respect, I just haven’t encountered such a person yet.

At the risk of being too fan girl – it reminds me of a Buffy episode where a batch of Real Vampires® invite Spike et al to come play. The horror on Buffy’s face as the kids spouted their beliefs about vampires was something I could sympathize with, not because of the reality of vampires but because of the dramatized idealism they’d associated with being a vampire.

The idea of drinking blood doesn’t freak me, having been one of those kids always injured at play and bleeding and then sucking on it until it stopped (I dunno why kids do that, it made sense back then). But drinking more than a little causes the stomach to reject, doesn’t it? I’m confused as to how a person can claim they need blood for sustenance when their GI system isn’t equipped to digest it.

I don’t really know about this digestion problem about blood. Thank you for the info, and I do believe that if there are vamps they can find people that interest them… and the goth/emo agenda, to be the real deal…. they believe in the immortality and love, that they suffer the same as the vampires… Myself, I don’t believe in that.
I don’t know if vampires can suffer at all, cause if they exists and are immortal, they are probably jaded, insensitive, hopefully not medieval and into the technology….

I wish to meet a few of them, to find out the true and lies about their kind to write with the true by my side, bring some light to the subject. (according to almost all the authors, not sun light please xD)

I am with Buzz on this one- he said everything I was thinking…

And last week I was watching a documentary on this same subject; it was quite interesting actually– and worthy of a laugh at times.
Then again, I am no one to judge- to each their own, and just like you I wish I could talk to one just out of curiosity… As long as they don’t sparkle, that is ;-) hheehe
