Chess Putnam has a lot on her plate. Mangled human corpses have started to show up on the streets of Downside, and Chess’s bosses at the Church of Real Truth have ordered her to team up with the ultra-powerful Black Squad agency to crack the grisly case.

Chess is under a binding spell that threatens death if she talks about the investigation, but the city’s most notorious crime boss—and Chess’s drug dealer—gets wind of her new assignment and insists on being kept informed. If that isn’t bad enough, a sinister street vendor appears to have information Chess needs. Only he’s not telling what he knows, or what it all has to do with the vast underground City of Eternity.

Now Chess will have to navigate killer wraiths, First Elders, and a lot of seriously nasty magic—all while coping with some not-so-small issues of her own. And the only man Chess can trust to help her through it all has every reason to want her dead.

Chess has been contacted by the Black Squad to help them crack a case that requires her to take a binding oath. Whenever she mentions anything related to the case, there is hell to pay in the form of pain. The ghosts of Elders past will come & take her to the City if she breaks the binding oath, so she has to tread very carefully. Which doesn’t help when Bump gets word of the investigation & starts pushing her for information & ends up once again pairing her up with Terrible.

Terrible is still not happy with Chess, he pretty much wants nothing to do with her & it’s really affecting Chess in ways she couldn’t imagine someone affecting her. There is also a new vendor in Downside, who has a pretty shady past & even creepier children, he may be the key to the investigation…if Chess survives it.

When I reviewed Unholy Ghosts & Unholy Magic, I said this series was one of the best of 2010…I lied. The Downside Ghost Series without a doubt is the BEST series of 2010. Stacia Kane is a genius! Three releases in a row has fed my new addiction, if this series doesn’t continue I may loose my mind! If you thought the previous two books were amazing, you are in for a action packed, dark & steamy trip to the Downside. I tried, I really did to read this whole series slow but dear god you just can’t stop!

The relationship between Chess & Terrible is so complicated & so heart breaking, I found myself in tears a few times (yes AGAIN). The action, holy cow it is non-freaking-stop, from start to finish there is action & drama that makes you wonder how Chess is going to fare out. The world Ms. Kane has built just keeps getting better & better, and extremely complex (I want a Downside Map!).

I don’t want to ruin anything for you all, but hang up a do not disturb sign, arm yourself with some kleenex & enjoy the ride! Now excuse me while I go rock back & forth until *crosses fingers* the next Downside book comes out.
