J.A. Saare: Top 10 Holiday Dislikes

When I was asked to contribute ten things I disliked about Christmas for Wicked Little Pixie, it was tough. I’m a Christmas lover at heart, and I couldn’t think of anything to contribute. Of course, this changed when I hit the chaos in my town that consists of crazy shoppers and one stop shopping.  One trip was enough to provide the top ten, and I was finally able to scrounge up a few things that irk me during the holiday season.

10. Traffic, traffic, and more traffic. I would elaborate on this, but is there really any point? My question becomes: Doesn’t anyone shop online anymore?

9.  Dog-eat-dog holiday shoppers.  Listen, I get it. That last limited edition Barbie is something your daughter/grandchild, etc wants so badly they’d kill for it.  But do you think fighting in the toy aisle is really worth it?  Do you want to make sure some blood mars the now bent plastic case so you can prove your unwavering devotion? Perhaps you should try another store?

8.  The “deals” that aren’t deals at all.  It’s time to come clean, retailers.  I’m in your store often, and I know when something is truly marked “down.”  Nothing is more offensive than when you see something which was originally $9.99 and is now advertised with a “Now $9.99.” Trust me, Wal-Mart, your shoppers know when you’ve upped the cost to make it seem as if you’re cutting them a break.

7.  Long lines. I highly suggest you bring reading material along if you decide to hit up Hell-Mart or Tarjay for groceries.  You’re likely to be there awhile.

6.  Christmas music. Don’t get me wrong, I love Christmas music. But when you’re inside a crowded store, waiting forever to grab a carton of milk or snag something for your child’s class as you stand behind a group of reunited friends who won’t get the hell out of the aisle, the last thing you want is to hear is, “It’s the most wonderful time of the year.”

5.  The germs.  Our entire family was wiped out for over a week with a horrible virus that spread through the house.  I’m not saying it came from my shopping, but I can’t count it out when several of the people around me were coughing, swiping at their runny noses, and acting as if they were going to barf at any moment.

4.  Increased prices.  If I could boycott several of the popular toy makers, I would.  No one should have to pay $90 for the newest Barbie Glam Jet or Legos Police City.  Insanity, I tell you, but Santa always has to deliver.

3.  Phone solicitors. Every year the amount of calls we receive asking for money increases. There’s nothing worse than when you want to help out a cause but they won’t take no for an answer. That’s why my husband answers the phone.  He’s better at dealing with it than me.

2.  Obligations.  Each year, these increase.  With several children, I’m always trying to find ways to make it to each party.  While I enjoy attending, it’s not entirely fun slipping out a few minutes early so you can haul ass across the boonies to make it to another location to watch your other child do the same.  All I can say is I’m practicing my sweetest smile in the event I’m pulled over for speeding.

1. When it’s all over.  God help me, I’m a glutton for punishment.  Because even with the above mentioned, I do love Christmas.  There is nothing quite like it.  It’s a good thing I keep Red Bull handy; otherwise I’d never make it through days one through twenty-five. *smile*

Thanks for allowing me to share.  Have a happy and safe holiday!  Time for egg nog!

This list is hysterical and 100% true. Thanks for participating!

One of my favorite things about the holidays is my aunt’s Christmas cookies. They’re to die for and each year she comes up with a new combination. Betty Crocker ain’t got nothin’ on her.

The food! We make delicious raspberry pastries and butterhorn rolls and pies and all sorts of goodies that only happen at Christmas-time :-) Other than spending time with my family, that’s my favorite part of Christmas.

Besides the food, it is getting to see all of my friends & family. I don’t get to see them too often.

Giving gifts. I love finding that perfect gift for someone and then getting to watch them open it. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy!

Despite all the things on your list, it’s amazing to see you can actually derive some form of twisted pleasure from it still. Not me. Not really at least. The only things I look forward to, may favorite part if you will, is the booze. You just can’t find too many uses for peppermint schnapps and eggnog any other time of the year!

Great list. I hope your children know how lucky they are to have you! My favorite part of the holiday is watching the grandkids. They are amazed by everything–the Christmas tree, all the outdoor decorations, holiday music, presents, cookies (of course) that they don’t ordinarily get. They are both two years old and everything is so new and wonderful through their eyes. Merry Christmas!

I love the food and the nog.

My favorite part is when the holidays are over and everything settles down again. :)

I saw a couple snake a parking spot for an old man today at the grocery store…seriously. By the time I found a parking spot and made it inside I thought there was no way I’d find them again. Well, the Christmas miracle was upon me because I ran into them in the produce section and I proudly announced in front of God and the brussel sprouts :”You know you snaked that spot from that old man right…and that makes you both total douche-bags right?! Merry fucking Christmas!” It felt pretty fantastic, and thought you’d get a kick out of that Jaime & WLP (the queen of snark)

Not entering, already own DUoSI. Merry christmas you guys!

My favorite part of the holidays buying gifts. I love going out and finding just the right gift for someone. It doesn’t have to be big or extravagant, but something they would appreciate, something to make them smile. Then I love wrapping the gifts so they are beautiful. I hate that my kids are older and mostly want cash or gift cards:(

I’m really not much for Xmas but I do love all ofthe pretty lights.

  • Lillie H (AliseOnLife) December 24, 2010 at 11:26 am

It’s funny how I would love to host Christmas one year, so I could sleep in my own bed, and not have to hike 5 hours to my grandparents who willingly have no internet, still have analog cable, and nothing stays open past 8pm. Oh well!

I guess the best part of Christmas for me though is that I love to bake cookies, and surprisingly, I don’t mind the crowds at the malls. I love getting just the right gift for everyone on my list. Also, I do hand-written cards individually, and it’s great when the person opens the card and looks happy.

My favorite part is getting together with family and I love giving presents.

  • ZombieJoe December 29, 2010 at 10:12 am

Favorite part? Well aside from our decidedly Halloweenesque, zombie-ish holiday decorations and zombie gingerbread men? (I’m serious on those by the way.) I would set it between making pizzelles (traditional Italian holiday cookie) and finding just the right gift.

Kids will always give you that list filled with things seen on television and the like, but nothing is better than when they opened up something they didn’t expect but is perfect for them. Like the T Rex hand puppet that topped the gift bag from one of my grandsons this year. He put it on his hand and was using it to open the rest of his presents. Nobody tell him it cost like $2.50…

My favorite part of the holidays would be the vacation time. Sleeping in, walking around in your PJs until noon. Yep, just being lazy.

  • Stephmartin71 December 29, 2010 at 10:18 pm

My favorite part of the holiday is when I’m making christmas cookies. I can’t cook worth a $#it but I luv to & am good at baking. weird huh? It’s my time, when I know, noone will bug me because they want their box of cookies, so it’s quiet & peaceful.. We’ll it was until we got a second furkid. They chase each other like dogs chasing cats and when they aren’t chasing each other, the puppy is sleeping on my feet, no matter where I move to, she is right there like a baby duck following it’s mother. I’ve never meet such a clingy bunch ;) so this year I did alot of tripping… lol
