Last year was your first trip to RT, correct?
Yes. I had attended comic book conventions in the past, but was completely unprepared for what was waiting for me in Columbus. RT is like a week-long slumber party, and I hadn’t packed my pajamas. (I mean that figuratively, not literally. Of course I packed my pajamas.) I was surprised by the strong sense of community at RT. I didn’t know anyone else attending, but everyone was so welcoming.
How did you get involved with the Mr. Romance competition?
I arrived at RT early for Bobbi Smith’s pre-convention writing workshop, and, as one of two men in her class, was teased about entering the Mr. Romance competition. I had no idea what it was, but a quick Google search clued me in. Two days later, however, an RT volunteer who had been in Bobbi Smith’s class told me that there had been some contestants who couldn’t make it to Columbus…and would I be interested? I was told I was the best-looking guy they could find on such short notice. I can be talked into almost anything if flattery is used.
Had you had any previous modeling experience?
None. I was out of shape, about twenty pounds over my ideal weight. Posing for topless photos was one of the more stressful experiences of my life. My heart goes out to anyone who strips for the camera on a regular basis.
Did you have a “fanboy” moment with any authors?
At the book fair, the Mr. Romance contestants were seated at a table next to Richelle Mead. She was signing her books; we were signing topless glossy photos of ourselves. Some of her fans stopped at our table and asked for signed photos. Somewhere in Ohio, there are dozens of teenage girls with photos of my naked chest in their scrapbooks. I was too embarrassed by the experience to have Richelle sign a book for me.
Will you be competing in the Mr. Romance competition again this year?
No. For about a week after last year’s convention, I worked out daily, drank protein shakes, and was very focused on returning to RT with six-pack abs and enormous biceps. I quickly realized how much work that would be and put an end to that dream. I think I’ve gained ten pounds since last year.
This year you’re part of the Faery Court. Any highlights you’d like to share?
This year’s Faery Ball will be Venetian Masquerade-themed. There will be ornate masks, decadent magnificence, glitter, and, of course, wings galore.

All I want to know is why aren’t you Fairy King? I want to start a write-in campaign for you as Fairy King damn it.
Seconded! #TeamAndrew rises again!
Andrew is one of my favorite dudes to follow on Twitter. And I also think it’s incredibly adorable that you took a picture of Richelle Mead signing a book for someone else, but were too nervous to ask her for a signed book yourself. LMAO. AWwwwwww!!!!
Andrew, you were awesome at RT last year. I’m so glad I met you, and I was pulling for you, dude. If anything, you won yourself a ton of fans that week who will never forget you for your good spirit and humor.
