Able to wield thunder and lightning, wyr sentinel Tiago Black Eagle has ruled the skies for centuries. His massive build and thunderous power make him one of the wyr’s best weapons. And he’s the one sent to protect Tricks, heir to the Dark Fae throne, when she’s almost assassinated in Chicago. Soon Tiago and Tricks will fall prey to the stormy hunger that engulfs them-a passion that will shake the very foundation of all the worlds.

This is a spoiler free review.

I have to put them all to rest. I have to bring to justice any of the Dark Fae who worked with my uncle, and help those he victimized like he victimized me. I don’t even want to do it, but I have to go back. I have to find peace or die trying.  * Nianiane Lorelle, AKA Thistle Periwinkle, AKA Tricks

Storm’s Heart is the squee-inducing second Elder Races novel by Thea Harrison. Niniane, formerly known as Tricks, is the most famous public personality of the Elder Races. With the death of Dark Fae King Urien, magical tests have proven that she is the next in line to take the thrown as the Queen of Dark Fae. With a heavy heart she has to leave her Wyr family and her career in PR for Cuelebre Enterprises to take the thrown. When a video pops up on youtube of her getting attacked and disappearing, Dragos dispatches Tiago AKA Dr. Death to find her and bring her back home for protection. After hunting Niniane down, Tiago quickly learns he cannot go neanderthal on her, dragging her kicking and screaming back to safety. Tricks believes that she must take her position as Queen for the greater good. She has no other choice if there is any chance for peace among the Dark Fae and Wyr again. Tiago finds out first-hand how deadly her accession is, and he also soon discovers his life has a new purpose.

Like everyone else who has read Dragon Bound, I was so excited to get a Tricks novel! She instantly became a favorite character for me (and Nat!) with her abundant flair and sass. Then there’s Tiago, the intimidating warlord and nomadic head of Dragos’s army. He is the ultimate sexy savage to her fluffy charismatic pixie; they both have very forceful personalities but in very different ways.  We saw there were massive sparks igniting in Dragon Bound, and those sparks were just as lethal when Tiago and Tricks reunite at that hotel room. She continues to defy him, and he reacts with his various forms of “GodDAMMIT, Tricks!” and I giggled each and every time! This the kind of dialog between the two that made me grin to myself:

He murmured to her, “You’re no fun when the stuffing’s been knocked out of you, your listlessness.”

Did that require an answer? She sighed.

“You’re like a rubber ball with no bounce,” he said. He cradled her cheek in one large palm. “A worm that’s lost its wiggle.”

A worm? “Oh please, the hyperbole.” She put a hand to her forehead. “It’s too flowery.”  pg. 57

Storm’s Heart is such a heart touching story about courage and sacrifice, with a hot hot hot romance. Perfect parts passion and tenderness. Here is my most favorite swoon-worthy quote:

“I will do whatever I have to do to keep you safe.” He bent to press his lips to the pulse that fluttered at the base of her neck. He would lie, cheat, steal, murder. Break vows, drop friendships, abandon responsibilities. Start wars or end them. “Whatever I have to do.”   pg. 111

There are great characters with very clever and entertaining narration. I just really dig the way Ms. Harrison can tell a story. And I am really excited over the direction of the series. We are introduced to a new Race, the Vampyres, and the heroine of the next book, Charling. Just as Dragon Bound did for me with Tricks, Storm’s Heart did for me with Charling. She is awesomely insane, and I cannot WAIT for for her story! I love a slightly tortured and crazy heroine. But now I’ve gotten ahead of myself. Storm’s Heart was a wonderfully enjoyable installment in the Elder Races series, and I cannot wait to see what happens next in Serpent’s Kiss with Charling and Rune! I don’t know many PNR fans that have not loved this series, so if you haven’t started yet, now is the time!

  1. Dragon Bound
  2. Storm’s Heart
  3. Serpent’s Kiss – October

I actually liked this one better than DB. It was indeed a hard act to follow, but I loved the intrigue andI adored Tiago. I confess (don’t hurt me) that I’ve read Carling’s books. . .and it even puts the bar up higher!!!

    • Spaz August 2, 2011 at 4:04 pm

Hi Carol! I must confess that overall, I liked DB better, but that certainly is not to say that I didn’t enjoy this one tremendously. T & T were perfect for me. I just got an ARC of Serpent’s Kiss and am BEYOND excited it raises the bar again!
