When Charley is rudely awakened in the middle of the night by her best friend who tells her to get dressed quickly and tosses clothes out of the closet at her, she can’t help but wonder what Cookie’s up to. Leather scrunch boots with a floral miniskirt? Together? Seriously? Cookie explains that a friend of hers named Mimi disappeared five days earlier and that she just got a text from her setting up a meet at a coffee shop downtown.
They show up at the coffee shop, but no Mimi. But Charley finds a message on the bathroom wall. Mimi left a clue, a woman’s name. Mimi’s husband explains that his wife had been acting strange since she found out an old friend of hers from high school had been found murdered a couple weeks prior. The same woman Mimi had named in her message.
Meanwhile, Reyes Alexander Farrow (otherwise known as the Son of Satan. Yes. Literally) has left his corporeal body and is haunting Charley. He’s left his body because he’s being tortured by demons who want to lure Charley closer. But Reyes can’t let that happen. Because if the demons get to Charley, they’ll have a portal to heaven. And if they have a portal to heaven…well, let’s just say it wouldn’t be pretty.
Can Charley handle hot nights with Reyes and even hotter days tracking down a missing woman? Will Cookie ever get a true fashion sense? And is there enough coffee and chocolate in the world to fuel them as they do?
Here is your signpost for the most hilarious read of the summer: Second Grave On The Left.
Darynda Jones has jumped up into one of my top ten favorite authors of all time with this hilarious sequel! Any author that mentions Stevie Ray Vaughan as road trip music has a special place in my heart!
“If it has testicles, it’s gonna give you trouble” – Bumper Sticker
I have to say, I love love looooove Charley. She is one of the best heroines out there, she can snark with the best of them and kick ass when she needs to. She’s been wonderfully developed and she keeps getting better. Second Grave on the Left was a one sitting book, you know the kind where you get nothing done? I wouldn’t have it any other way, it’s just that engaging.
“I jumped out of bed, stumbled a bit when a sheet plagued with separation anxiety attacked my foot….”
Have I mentioned this book is even funnier then the first? From the bumper sticker quotes to things that go bump in the night (no not the prostitutes) I laughed at least twice a chapter! BONUS! Ms. Jones has a way with words that can make you laugh hard without taking you out of the story, even when you’re reaching for kleenex. Full out ugly laughs people, be prepared!
Charley is trying to find Mimi, a friend of a friend who leaves a cryptic message then disappears. It’s a real mystery, which is exactly why we’ve come to love Darynda Jones, she keeps you guessing right to the last page.
And Second Grave on the Left has the most amazing AMAZING *ugh* I can’t even explain, see for yourself:
“I’d had him inside me before. I’d known heaven for a brief period of time, the experience so surreal, so earth-shattering, I was certain he’d ruined me to all other men forever. Seriously, who could compete with a being created from beauty and sin and fused together with the blistering heat of sensuality? He was a god amount men. Damn it.“
Sweet merciful cheese on a cracker, how hot is that? I need a fan and a cold shower after typing that. That said, yep Reyes is still around & when he calls Charley “Little girl grim” a little part of me got a bit swoonish. New word created just for that very sentence.
There is a big build up to the story arc, so be prepared to want the third book immediately. Have I mentioned how much I hate waiting for this series? It’s just that damn good!
*Side note* My ARC came with a CD reading of the book, how cool is that? But as much as I liked the addition of the CD to this series, I love reading it myself. But I did love the narration! You can have your own audio version available at Macmillan Audio, click here for more info & an audio excerpt.
Charley Davidson is inappropriate, self deprecating & damnit I love her!

Thank you for this review. I got both book yesterday and let just say that I have not been able to put it down…..wow love it. The only thing I manage to do was to trow some crackers and peanut butters at the kids.
