The year 2013 marks a return to writing for me. For the last two years I’ve been busy launching and managing the Heroes and Heartbreakers website. I left that job in September to write. I’ve got both a contemporary and a non-vampire/werewolf paranormal in the works. So…here I come!
There were tons of wonderful books out in 2012, but I have to say that my favorite historical read was an oldie, Connie Brockway’s As You Desire, which I reread with my bookclub and totally fell in love with all over again. For my favorite contemporary it was an ARC of Megan Caldwell’s upcoming clever women’s fiction novel, Vanity Fare, and for paranormal it was J.R. Ward’s Lover Reborn. (I’m obsessed with BDB.)
PIE. Pie with fresh whipped cream.
Um…I don’t know that I have one. I’m sure there were some 80’s synthesizer versions of holiday songs that were probably quite unpleasant.
PIE! I always make homemade pie. And I always go to Detroit for Christmas. Which always makes me feel sort of badass.
Well, I always go to the annual “White Diana” party here in Brooklyn. It’s like a white elephant, except that it’s named after somebody’s horrible ex-girlfriend. We wrap all the hideous things lying around the house and throw them into the goodie pile (which consists of everybody elses’s hideous, wrapped things). It still amazes me how many unwanted/bizarrely entertaining/hilariously unusable/fantastically bad things a person can accumulate over the course of a year. Especially in New York.
I must have put it out of my memory. I’d feel so bad.
Making pies with my mom who died during the holidays last year.
I feel like everybody already knows the lesser known factoids about me! The Antarctica thing, the Bob Dylan thing, the Popsicle thing, the Fabio thing… What’s left? I mean, I’m down to, “She was born with an extra toe,” which is totally a lie. I only have ten.
I don’t collect much anymore (though I still own a huge collection of gaudy cocktail rings), but every time I go to a foreign country I try to bring back a really awesome keepsake. I have the most beautiful carved wooden Buddha from Cambodia.
Giveaway Details: Liz is giving away a signed copy of Wired to one lucky reader. Just tell Liz what your favourite holiday smell is!
I would like to state, for the record, that despite being one of Liz’s closest friends, she has yet to make PIE! for me. Sob. So Liz’s PIE! WOULD be my favorite holiday smell if I had ever smelled it.
This is true. I owe you a pie. I make a particularly good pecan pie. Some time in the next decade, I swear to you that I will make you a pie.
The smell of a real Christmas tree is my favorite smell of Christmas. Since my hubby and children are allergic to the sap of most of these trees, I also enjoy the smell of Apple pie.
The smell of apples and cinnamons…I drape my house with it during the holidays until my Honeybuns tells me STOP–that is enough! (I say, it’s never enough!)
Gina, what scent is this? A candle? A spray? (For some reason the idea of a Christmas-scented pet spray just popped into my head. Heh.)
Two scents: (1) Apple Cobbler pet spray by Bedhead (sold at Petsmart) and (2) I will bake apples with cinnamon on it or make pies or melt candles from Scentsy. YUMMY!
I looooove the smell of trees. Balsam!!
Yup. I’m with you on that.
I’m so glad that you’re going back to writing and I can’t wait to read your new stuff soon(hopefully!).
Omigosh, thank you so much!
But … but … what KIND of pie do you make? (I’m apple or pumpkin, personally). (as for favorite smell? Baking cookies. I actually (really) like it better than eating cookies. But not eating cookie dough …
My signature pies are pecan and pumpkin–for some reason when it comes to apple, I prefer to make an apple crisp. Something about the brown sugar topping. And…now I’m hungry.
Things that smell. THINGS THAT SMELL? Are you trying to tell me something?
And I have to agree with Lori. The real pine smell. That’s awful nice. Oh, wait. And the char smell from the fireplace!
Okay, I can focus. I like the smell of the pies that I never bake for Megan.
I love the smell of Christmas Trees.
I love the smell of warm home-baked sugar cookies, mmmm.
The smell of real Xmas trees, cinnamon
This is hard because I love so many but the turkey roasting has to top them all.
Thanks for the great post! I definitely not a big smell kinda person, especially artificial stuff, so I’ll go w/ the smell of baked goods, light pine, peppermint
Favorite holiday smell? For me it would be spice cake served warm with home made applesauce. Oh and Liz! I am sooooo happy to hear you are writing again! Please keep us posted! (p.s. BDB rocks!!!)
Will do!!
I love all the smells on the holidays. My favorite smell is the one that accumulates during the day while cooking the holiday dinner — turkey, sage stuffing, sweet potatoes, apple pie, pumpkin pie, waldorf salad…. Oh, and I can’t forget the pine scent that wafts through every time someone rushes by a tree or a wreath.
My favorite Holiday smell is Christmas dinner cooking!
Gosh, there are so many! My favorite, I guess, is the turkey cooking and the onions and celery for the dressing being sauteed in the skillet.
LOL I live in Michigan so your comment about Detroit made me laugh. I don’t go there much, but we have family in Flint, which is a little Detroit, and now I’m going to feel bad ass when we go there!
You know those almonds they roast in the mall with cinnamon and sugar? Man, that smell is my favorite smell ever. I know you can get those year round now, but they used to only be around during the holidays. LOVE that smell.
I love cinnamon.
mm pumpkin pie or apple pie, they both smell wonderful and yummy
I definitely see a trend here – PIE, yes pie is a wonderful thing and it so makes the world a better place. To go with it one of my favorite holiday smells is an Eggnog Latte, oh yes definitely a delight. Thank you for taking the time and effort to share with us today and making me smile.
Fresh cut pine
I like vanilla.
Gingerbread! Thank you for the chance to win!
