Scarred. Damaged. Living with a terrible secret. Agent of the Underlight Wesley “Hauk” Haukon has nothing left but the fight for liberty against the oppressive Order of Ananke. He’s starting to lose hope…and then he sees her.
Despite her night job as a burlesque dancer, grad student Jolie Benoit has always played the mostly good girl. That all changes following a scorching sexual encounter with a stranger whose face she doesn’t see. After she’s kidnapped by thugs and rescued by a man with a very familiar voice, Jolie becomes a pawn in a struggle she never knew existed.
Hauk knows he cannot have her, and resolves to protect his heart and his secrets. But as they work together and grow closer, he finds new reason to keep fighting. Dare he risk hope in a new life, one where Jolie can see past his ravaged face and where their friendship can grow into something more?

Never judge a book buy its cover. I should remember this but then I fall in love and buy books with pretty covers all the time. This was not the case with How Beauty Met the Beast. If you look at the cover, the initial impression is Victorian steampunk, at least to me. Boy, was I wrong. The story goes something like this, Jolie Benoit works as a burlesque dancer eschewing the traditional morees of her upper-crust family. One day she runs into “The Beast” Sergeant Wesley Hauk, whose leg is missing and his body has major scarring from an accident in Afghanistan. Hauk, as he’s known to his compadres, works with a group known as the Underlight fighting the good fight of keeping society from being completely controlled by a powerful cult known as the Order of Ananke. The Order of Ananke has some powerful members and soon the conflict between Hauk’s faction and the cult hits close to home for Jolie.
This ladies and gentlemen, is a novella by Carina Press. The setting is geared towards the holiday season, which call me a Grinch, but normally I stay away from Christmasy/holdiay based novels. For $1.99 at Amazon, I am so glad I picked this up. Hauk is a stoic but loveably damaged hero who is trying to figure his way around the sassy and lovely Jolie. The sexual tension between the pair is sizziling. Add in fighting an evil cult and a cool secret society living underground in Austin, Texas and you’ve got an unusual paranormal tale that skims the line at steampunk, but falls way more into the category of paranormal romance meets urban fantasy. The only downside to the novella is that it is a novella and part of a series. There is not necessarily a happily ever after, but rather a let’s watch the couple’s relationship progress. Also, if you want a strong female character, Jolie is pretty badass.
The next installment in this trilogy, How Beauty Saved the Beast comes out February 11, 2013.
