AAD 2012 Author Spotlight & Giveaway: Jae Lynne Davies

December 7, 2011 in Author Interviews, Book Cons

I am so excited to have Jae Lynne Davies. She is a new-to-me author, and I tasked her with some questions I wanted to know about her. Her book also sounds awesome, so we shall also include more information here on Mythic. – Spaz

What is the first book you remember reading and loving as a child?

As a child, I enjoyed the old staples that my daughter is now reading for the first time. I could tell you that the classic Dr. Seuss titles and my favorite Little Golden Books I’m collecting for my daughter’s library inspired a love of reading, but I’m pretty sure the defining moment was in grade school when I read “The House without a Christmas Tree” by Gail Rock. I remember thinking how much I enjoyed the story and I can’t wait to share the book with my kids.

What is your first memory of realizing you were passionate about writing?

For quite some time, I aspired to be a vocalist, so I wrote lyrics on a constant basis. But during high school, I often wrote screenplays and short stories that I believe paved the way to romantic fiction and ultimately sparked a passion for writing.

When you need to find inspiration in music, what do you turn to?

Depending on which series I’m working on at the time, I have certain playlists I turn to for creative energy. More often than not, you’ll find me listing to rock music. Songs performed by artists such as Seether, Evanescence, Shinedown, Three Days Grace, Breaking Benjamin, Foo Fighters, and 30 Seconds to Mars usually speak to the Muse when I need a burst of creativity.

In instances where I might need a particular song to place me inside a certain scene, I usually know which musical artist could set the tone. I could spend quite some time scrolling through discography until I find the right song.  But once I do, the scene plays out in my head as though waiting for just the right soundtrack.

Do you have a guilty pleasure on TV, and if so, what is it?

Oh, yes. I have a few guilty pleasures. Sunday night is the one night of the week I actually sit and watch TV. The Walking Dead on AMC is so addictive! My husband and I first caught buzz about The Walking Dead last year during a trip to Comic Con in New York City. I was under the impression that the show mainly focused on zombies and I immediately thought it would be the most boring show on TV. I mean, much could they do with zombies? Well, I was wrong. The show isn’t just about zombies, but how people survive during the aftermath of the ‘zombie apocalypse’. I can’t get enough!

I’m also watching Dexter on Showtime, Spartacus on Showtime, and you’ll see me stop everything to catch the latest episode of True Blood on HBO.

What is the first thing you plan to do when you get to New Orleans for AAD?

After I unpack, the first thing on my list is coffee from Café du Monde. Once I check that off my list, I’ll consider myself off to a good start.  After that, it’s time to get down to business.

I can’t wait to meet everyone in New Orleans!

Thank you so much to Jae Lynne for taking the time to answer our interview questions!! Let’s read more about Mythic:

Gianna Marino is a human/vampire hybrid who is fueled by her thirst for vengeance for the murder of her family, and has little tolerance for distractions. While at a constant war with the two halves of herself, in a world in which she doesn’t belong, and tormented by a past that she hardly remembers, she vows to punish Mattias Vitale—the vampire responsible.

But during her infiltration of his coven, posing as a human with the desire to be turned, her game of seduction with Mattias creates a burning and mutual desire, when Nicholas Sutton—a dark and handsome stranger, intrudes on their play, threatening to expose her with an agenda of his own. One man is sexy and dangerous, the other is powerful and deadly. Both are vampires that want nothing more than to ravish her senseless, claiming her for themselves in a bond of body and blood, while she longs to kill one and bed—them both.

But when Gianna discovers a secret that blurs the lines between good and evil, forever changing the course of her existence, destiny will soon determine on which side she’ll stand.

EXCERPT:

Nicholas Sutton’s mystery woman led him down a long hallway where the walls were painted a rich burgundy red. After a few turns, they arrived at what he assumed were his temporary living quarters. As if she sensed his persistent tension, she faced him. “Don’t worry. There are no dungeons or torture chambers. They are merely sleeping quarters in a place where you won’t be disturbed. I would hate to have the comfort of my guest interrupted. With that addressed, the room contains most of the things you’ll need and I trust your accommodations will be comfortable.” She turned, with the intent to leave.

“Do I at least get to know your name?”

She paused and hesitated before she faced him with her answer. “Gianna. Gianna Marino. Oh and Nicholas? Do try your very best not to make a mess of things.”

At the moment, too many questions ran through his mind for him to retort.

How does she know my name?

Does she know what I am?

Does she know that I have the potential to kill her at any time, without warning?

While he wanted to demand answers, dawn was near and he was famished. If he didn’t feed before he slept, he’d awaken weak and ravenous. Gianna led him to a beautifully decorated room that would provide both comfort and privacy.

Nicholas surveyed the space that rivaled a guest suite at New York City’s Plaza Hotel. The wall décor held neutral, earthy tones and the tapestries were of rich antiquity, which led him to believe they were chosen with care.

Curious, he walked into the bathroom. It contained both a shower and a bathtub of generous size, enough to fit at least five or six adults. Nicholas turned and walked out. His eyes drifted to the king- sized bed where he’d soon take his rest and he was exhausted. How he wanted to fall onto it and regain his strength with a long day’s sleep.

Gianna approached the bed, bending ever so slightly over the top of the mattress to smooth out the sheets. It beckoned him further. As her hand ran over the glossy comforter, the lighting in the room revealed the sheen of the oils in her skin. Soft, warm, healthy skin. His mouth watered at the sight of her.

Still leaning, possibly stretched to her capacity, she closed the distance between her breasts and the bed linens. Her tight black pants cupped curves so fine, he wanted a bite. In fact, a bite wouldn’t be enough. He wanted to take his time and nibble on her all day, giving but a sample of his talent, while showing her that a bed so large should never go to waste.

Nicholas’s libido took control of his mind as he considered pinning Gianna to the bed to have his way with her until they were both breathless and sweaty, or until she begged him to stop, whichever came first. He didn’t doubt her ability to satisfy his appetite for both blood and body.

He gazed at her in naked hunger and imagined how amazing she’d look completely bare to him, how her voice sounded while moaning in his ear and the feel of her scoring his back with her nails, on the brink of a fierce orgasm. Licking his lips, he nearly panted over the momentary fantasy. Oh those wicked thoughts.

I’ve always had an affinity for writing of any kind. However, it wasn’t until I lost my beloved Grandfather, and found myself writing a heartfelt eulogy, that my passion awakened.

After a somber deliverance, and numerous compliments, I decided to place fingers on my laptop keyboard. The rest, as they say, is history.

My favorite stories are those that don’t involve an average, everyday couple. I want conflict, and I want believable, but forbidden relationships. The more complex, the better. It’s the reason I love the paranormal as much as I do. I want to create those impossible situations that leave my readers intrigued and thirsting for more.

I consider myself blessed to be a wife to a wonderful and supportive husband, a mother to two of the most wonderful children a woman could ever ask for, and two dogs who have energy that rival my toddlers. When I’m not writing, I work in the ever-changing Real Estate and Mortgage industries, and am always looking for creative ways to promote my work as an author.

I’m also an active member of the Romance Writers of America, Futuristic, Fantasy and Paranormal, and the New Jersey Romance Writers Association.

Hushed Blog Tour – Guest Post: Kelley York

Ask Questions About EVERYTHING

I’ve been asked a lot lately about how I came up with the idea for HUSHED. I’m very much a character-driven writer (and reader), so all my stories start with a character. Might not even be the main character, but…a character. I don’t do much in the way of heavy plotting and outlining, because odds are I’m going to follow that outline for a few chapters…then deviate from it completely. It ends up being a waste of my time.

But I do ask myself questions. Lots and lots of questions.

HUSHED started out with one basic idea: a boy who kills people for the girl he loves. I took that central piece of information and asked questions.

Why does he kill for her? How does he do it? Does he have regret about it? Is he going to get caught? What’s the one thing that could change his course of action?

These questions and answers lead to more questions and answers. It isn’t outlining, but it’s giving me a solid idea about my characters, what motivates them, and what their story is going to be.

I envy plotters and their ability to know exactly what they’re writing as they go, because sometimes not having that leaves a writer floundering a little. But if you’re like me, and outlines just aren’t working, find a method that does work for you.

Whether you’re a plotter or a think-as-you-go writer, knowing your characters is essential to making a good, believable story. Question everything your character does, because everyone behaves a certain way for a reason. You might discover neat things about your characters that’ll broaden their story and what you can do with them.

(Besides, it’s kinda fun to learn all their embarrassing childhood stories…)

‘Kelley York delivers in this impressive debut. I was at the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next! Bottom line, this was unputdownable!!!’

Guest Post: PJ Heard WHAT On A Plane!?!

November 25, 2011 in Author Interviews

It’s the holiday season and for some, that means traveling far and wide to be with friends, family and loved ones. Have you ever listened to the stuff people say in transit? I mean just listened and let your mind take it where it really shouldn’t go?

One aspect of my day job is the requirement to travel, about 80% of my time. I’m flying at least twice a week, every week. For those of you who follow me on Twitter, you know I amuse myself by tweeting overheard commentary and when the delays are really bad, running impromptu contests and giveaways via Twitter. (Follow me to play: @pjschnyder, you know I’m in for some serious delays with the oncoming winter weather)

To give you a taste of the holiday fun, here’s some of my favorites from the past couple of months:

During Boarding:

Gate attendant: “Beginning pre-boarding. We would now like to welcome handicapped and anyone needing extra assistance in boarding.”
Older, able-bodied teen strides toward the gate.
Father tells her to wait.
Teen: “That’s me, Daddy. Duh.”

Guy #1 “I’m First Class”
Guy #2 “I have more class than you”

PJ: Platinum versus Chairman’s Preferred, battle of the frequent flyer mileage.

Overhead bin storage:

Don’t worry. A little lubricant and it’ll always fit.

You’re about 2 inches too high. I don’t see how you’re going to squeeze it in.

Guy #1 “Got it in, nicely done.”
Guy #2 “It’s that curvature”

PJ: *fist bump*

It’s ridiculous how they expect to stuff it in there

PJ: Yeah, sometimes they’re just dreaming.

Flight Fun:

Please review the safety card located in the pocket on the seat n front of you. Alternatively, I recommend using it as a fan since it is as hot as summer on board even though I’ve asked the pilot to turn down the heat.

At this time, we require that passengers turn off all electronic devices, including laptops and cellular phones, anything with an on and off switch and anything that starts with an “i”

Guy #1: “Is the girl next to you turned on?”
Guy #2: “I don’t think she’s quite there yet.” ~ ref to wifi in flight

PJ: I only just booted my laptop boys

Flight attendant: “Oh, something must be leaking.”

PJ: O.O

When asked for a Red Bull and Vodka in First Class -> Attendant: I’m sorry, sir, but they stopped allowing us to serve energy drinks or things that make you hyper on board.

PJ: Oh, so a barbituate is okay?

AAD 2012 Author Spotlight: Diana Castilleja

November 16, 2011 in Author Interviews, Book Cons

I am very thrilled that in discovering new authors who will be attending Authors After Dark in 2012, I reached out to Diana Castilleja. I truly enjoyed interviewing her, and I hope you enjoy learning more about her and her recent book release, Resurrection! – Spaz

Hi Pam! Thanks so much for letting me guest blog with you. I’m really looking forward to meeting everyone at Authors After Dark. Oh! And trying a beignet or three. LOL

What is the first book you remember reading and loving as a child?
Honestly, my first love was The Black Stallion books. Traveled the world from my own bedroom with those books. I know I read them from an early age, but one of the things I do remember is riding my bike to the library to find them. I was around eleven or so, I think. I also read C.S. Lewis’s Narnia books. I still have the original white cover edition, 1970s.

What is your first memory of realizing you were passionate about writing?
Wow. Well, I was a late bloomer to it actually. Fell into writing if you will. I started around 1990 on an IBM Selectric that I had bought in a pawn shop. Went nuts looking for the disks for that thing because it was already outmoded and outdated. By 1992, the typewriter was gone and I had put it all in a drawer. Life happened. But it was the initial seed. When I picked it back up again in 2004, the bug bit hard and I haven’t looked back.

When you need to find inspiration in music, what do you turn to?
Music to me is white noise. I don’t really use it that much, not even to set moods to be honest.

Do you have a guilty pleasure on TV, and if so, what is it?
My guilty pleasure is that I don’t watch TV. I know. I’d rather read. I might watch a Big Bang Theory with the DH, or a Rangers game (Baseball, not hockey, though I like that too.)

What is the first thing you plan to do when you get to New Orleans for AAD?

Before or after I tackle-hug every person I know? LOL Honestly, not a clue. My roomie and me are driving in to NOLA from Texas so it’s going to be interesting

<Spaz> I plan on tackle-hugging everyone, too, Diana, look out!

So, let’s find out more about Diana’s latest release, shall we?!

Wolf Brother’s Legacy: Resurrection

Angie Merrick is dying. Agony unlike any she’s known fills her body and steals a little more of her life every day. Not one doctor can help her, but when modern science has failed, a light of an extinct Native American people lures her back to her first love: research of the Jahehn. An ancient talisman was once one of her greatest searches, and becomes the perfect distraction when there is nothing left but waiting to die. With her life being ripped to shreds in more than one way, Angie seeks one last connection with a people she helped to reveal to the scientific world.

Except death is not stalking Angie. A timeless pact created through the spirit world is demanding her compliance and unknowingly fighting it is causing her seizures. The search for the talisman takes her to the one place where she could find answers and possibly not die from powers she doesn’t understand.

She could live if those who fear exposure hadn’t decreed Angie must die by the very spirit their pact was sworn to protect.

To purchase Resurrection:

Diana currently resides in central Texas with her husband and son. When not focusing her energy on her family and her writing, she loves to travel and haunt bookstores.

She’s lived in several states across the south and midwest, as well as traveling to Mexico. With moving every year or changing schools since the fourth grade to her sophomore year, she learned reading was a fast escape. The freedom to read about anything and everything has fueled her adult imagination. She also enjoys romance, horses, and yes, still loves to read.

Right now, she’s probably attacking her keyboard writing her next book. If she’s not, she should be!

An Interview With Author/Actress Kathryn Leigh Scott

September 7, 2011 in Author Interviews

I am pleased to welcome actress and author Kathryn Leigh Scott to Wicked Lil Pixie today. Ms. Scott is best known for her work on Dark Shadows, a gothic soap opera. Dark Shadows is currently being adapted by Tim Burton for a film release next year, which she just shot a cameo for. Ms. Scott has just released Dark Passages, a novel that mixes her time on Dark Shadows with fiction. You can find more information on Ms. Scott’s Website

WLP: Can you tell us a little bit about Dark Passages and how it came to be?

I’ve always wanted to write about my first year in New York, a period of time bookended by the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962 and President Kennedy’s assassination a year and a month a later in November 1963. It was such an extraordinary time of change for me, a farm girl from the Midwest arriving in the Big City, working as a Playboy Bunny ad eventually getting cast in the daytime soap, Dark Shadows. When I finished the book, it occurred to me . . .  “what if Meg Harrison was a real vampire?” I rewrote the entire novel, adding the paranormal elements.

WLP: What percentage of Dark Passages would you say is based on what you experienced and how much is fiction?

I wanted to capture that period of intense change and youthful exuberance I experienced in my own life at the time, and I wrote about that time and world I remembered so well, but all of that is background and setting. In fact, nothing that happens to Meg Harrison happened to me in my own life. It is complete fiction.

WLP: I really loved the ending of Dark Passages, but its left open ended. Does that mean we can look forward to more of Meg’s adventures? If so, when can we expect to read it?

I am already at work on the sequel, but I cannot tell you when the second novel will be published. I’m afraid I have a backlog of writing projects!

WLP: You founded a publishing company, Pomegranate Press, in 1986. What made you start the company?

When I wrote My Scrapbook Memories of Dark Shadows in 1985, I already had my eye on starting a publishing company. I knew how to reach my audience for the book and I had already secured deals with two book clubs. I poured profits from my first book into production of four books I’d acquired from other writers for second season catalog. I really wanted to publish “evergreens,” nonfiction books on entertainment subjects, such as classic film and television. It was a good business plan and my company has been active for more than 25 years. I cut back only because of my husband’s health and my desire to focus more of my energies on my own writing.

WLP: Did you have any trouble writing any of the characters in the book?

Honestly, no. I almost feel that my characters created themselves. I had such a lot of fun with this book! When my husband read the completed manuscript, he said, “I hope you realize you are writing about your mother!”

WLP: I’d be remiss not to make mention of your Playboy Club days, did you have any embarrassing moments while working there?

Like my Bunny tail sweeping someone’s cocktail off a table? Nothing memorable that was too terrible, but the life of a teenager is one embarrassment after another, so I am sure I was mortified much of the time. I do remember the Beatles coming to the Club in 1964, all of them ordering rum and coke. The fun thing was that as awed as all of the Bunnies were, the Beatles were clearly in awe of us!

WLP: You played many characters on Dark Shadows; which did you find the hardest?

I played Maggie Evans, Josette DuPres, Rachel Drummond and Lady Kitty Hampshire. I loved the first two roles, both love interests of the vampire Barnabas Collins. The hardest role was Kitty, because she was not as clearly defined. In soaps, you play roles moment-to-moment and they soon evolve into dimensional characters, but Kitty remained hazy . . . although I loved her elegant wardrobe!

WLP: Many of us are excited about Tim Burton’s interpretation of Dark Shadows, but even happier that some of the original cast has cameos in it. Did it feel surreal to return to Collinswood?

It was extraordinary to see the incredible interior and exterior sets for Collinwood and the entire town of Collinsport! We had elaborate sets, but they were confined to the interior of a cramped soundstage. We all felt utterly transported, and it was a thrilling experience to meet and work with Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham-Carter and Michelle Pfeiffer.

WLP: What do you think about all the new vampire movies making the rounds?

I’ve only seen one of the Twilight films, and none of the various other films. I simply have no interest in them.

WLP: Do you have any favorite Dark Shadows bloopers?

Many! And I have written about most of them in Dark Shadows Memories. I think one of the funniest occurred at the very end of one episode when Jonathan Frid was caught on camera walking out of his quick-change room behind the set of Collinwood carrying his clothing on a hanger over his shoulder. Another time, he was seen swatting a fly dive bombing his nose throughout a very dramatic scene in the mausoleum.

WLP: It’s been 45 years, this year, since Dark Shadows aired. What’s one thing you’ve learned during that time has stuck with you for those years?

When serious flubs and bloopers occurred on Dark Shadows, producer Dan Curtis assured us the audience would see the show once and that would be the end of it. Instead, 45 years later those horrendous moments are immortalized on DVDs and youtube. Lesson: Producers lie to you!

WLP: Thanks to Ms. Scott, I’ll be giving away a copy of Dark Passages & a Signed Bookmark! To enter, tell us what part you’d have liked to play on Dark Shadows or simply comment if you haven’t seen the show!

US Only, Ends September 14th.
