Synde is taking over the reins in our latest Music & Books Interview, isn’t she nice to give me a day off? I’m sure she is still trying to recover from the spectacular fail that was 25 words of less with Henry Rollins. *snort* Who knew he was a man of few words? Glad she took that one for the team.
Thanks to Synde for doing all the dirty work, it’s much appreciated. Thanks to Dusty for talking Depeche Mode, Type O & books in one interview.
In case you’ve missed the previous interviews (Clem of White Cowbell Oklahoma, Henry Rollins, Klayton of Celldweller) click for the direct link to each of them.
Take it away Synde…..

Synde here…I have a little present for ya all…;)
A couple of years ago while visiting my brother in Half Moon Bay California, I heard about this psychobilly punk band out of Santa Cruz, California, called the Stellar Corpses. Lucky for me I found a local gig of theirs and went to see them a few nights later. Whenever I see a new band I don’t hold my breath, it’s the jaded part that came with working in the music business for such a long time. But holy crap on a cracker WHAT A FRIGGIN SURPRISE! They were everything I love about punk, rockabilly, and splatter punk. Honestly it’s as though the Misfits, 45 Grave and the Reverend Horton Heat had a love child. I never spoke to the band that night, was with my bro and his cronies so not appropriate. But I did connect with their lead singer Dusty Grave on Twitter, thus the interview idea was born. I hope you all enjoy the interview, he’s a fun guy..

Synde: Hey Dusty, thanks so much for joining us here at Wicked Lil Pixie. I thought we’d talk about books and music some and then a bunch of other crap. Hope that’s OK. So let’s just dive in.What books influenced you as a child? Do those books have any influence on your music?
Dusty: No problem, I love talking about books and music haha. As far as literature, I’d say the books that effected me/screwed me up the most as a kid were The Outsiders and the Bible. I never liked reading much in school until I got a copy of The Outsiders. It was the first book I found on my own and totally fell in love with. I related to it so much and it gave me a glimpse into the world of the classic American teenage rebel. My English class actually performed the play and I got to be Ponyboy for the scene when he runs away from home. I couldn’t put the book down. I’d skip school to read it over and over.
The Bible on the other hand was gently and ever so lovingly forced down my throat. There’s no doubt that it had a major influence on me. I think that it’s pretty messed up to tell kids that all of those stories are real. Being raised believing in magic and demons and resurrection is probably the reason I love Horror so much. Jesus was my first zombie!
Synde: I had to share the first zombie quote with half of my day job co-workers. It was so awesome .hey he was “raised” from the dead..Just like a zombie
Dusty: So, those are the two books that first fueled my obsession for Horror and 1950’s American culture. Mix those elements together and you have my music.
Synde: What are you reading now?
Dusty: I’m trudging through the end of Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles. I absolutely loved the first four or five, but it’s been an uphill battle since Armand. I’ve also been reading a lot of H.P. Lovecraft.
Synde: Yeah she really lost her momentum. I hate that she renounced it all too..So sad..But Lovecraft, he’s a big win. One of my all time favorite authors.
Dusty: Yeah but she’s back now! She’s no longer a Christian due to the church’s stance on homosexuality. She’s actually speaking out against them quite a bit on Facebook. It’s great. Plus, she never actually “renounced” any of her old novels. She actually clears up that misconception on her website.

Synde: Cool! I will check it out. Do you have a favorite genre of book?
Dusty: Horror and Sci-Fi are my favorite genres for literature, especially if the author mixes in Psychology, religion and a little sexual deviance. I love Oscar Wilde’s “The Picture of Dorian Gray” for those reasons.
Synde: What are you listening to (music wise) these days?
Dusty: Type-O Negative “Black No.1″ has been on repeat for the past couple days. I would love to do a Psychobilly cover of that song! Today I’ve bouncing around between Bad Religion, Bauhaus, Christian Death, AFI, Depeche Mode and Wednesday 13.
Synde: Wednesday 13 remind me so much of 69 Eyes. So old Christian Death I hope? Like with Rozz?
Dusty: I love 69 Eyes. Especially the Devils and Angels Albums. Oh yeah of course the CD with Rozz! I also love The Shadow Project.
Synde: How does your scholarly pursuit influence your music? You are studying Psychology right?
Dusty: Yep. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and now I’m working on a degree in music. I have a creative monster inside me that demands a constant flow of new information. I also love Astronomy. Learning about the Universe makes problems seem very small and Psychology seem superfluous. The name “Stellar Corpses” actually came from an Astronomy class I took. It means “dead stars” which will most likely be the title track of our next album. I’m always getting song ideas from books and lectures. On our latest album “Welcome to the Nightmare” I wrote a song called “My Shadow,” which is a reference to Jungian Psychology and the idea of “facing your inner demons.” It’s a concept as old as time, found in the stories of Horus, Perseus, Buddha, Jesus and even Luke Skywalker.
Synde: If you could sit down to dinner with 5 people living or dead who would they be?
Dusty: Horus, Perseus, Buddha, Jesus Christ, and Luke Skywalker.
Synde: Interesting addition of an Egyptian God? What intrigues you about Horus specifically?
Dusty: Well I’m glad you asked. What intrigues me about Horus is that he was the first “dying savior.” All the other saviors were modeled after him including Jesus. Horus was miraculously conceived, was born on December 25th, performed miracles, was killed and was resurrected. Plus he has a sweet eye!
Synde: Since it’s near Halloween…. Worst childhood costume? Best Costume?
Dusty: Oh man. Haha. When I was super young I wasn’t allowed to wear scary costumes, so I was a bear… a very sad bear. My best costume was probably Edward Scissorhands. A friend helped me weld scissors together to make the hands and I made my own suit out of black vinyl and silver buckles. I still have it. I actually wore it for a photo shoot that I did last year. I was a Gothic version of an old German story book character named Struwwelpeter, a boy who never cut his hair or his fingernails. So I did my hair all crazy and made long black fingernails to go with the black vinyl suit.

Synde: What movie still scares the shit out of you?
Dusty: The Exorcist! The special effects are some of the best I’ve ever seen and I’d argue that they are some of the best in film history. Plus the whole religious aspect of the film makes it even creepier to me.

Synde: What’s next for Dusty & The Stellar Corpses?
Dusty: We toured a lot this year and we’re taking it easy for the next couple of months. Right now I’m designing a new website that should be ready within the next month (www.stellarcorpses.com). We’re also waiting for our music to be released on i Tunes, which should happen any day now. Other than that we are writing new songs as we speak and going into the studio in January to record our next album!
Synde: Thanks Dusty for your time..It was a pleasure! I hope you come up to Seattle sometime soon! Would love to drag some people out to see Stellar Corpses.. Hey everyone there are a bunch of videos on You Tube of the Stellar Corpses..check um out..I don’t think you will be disappointed!
