Spaz: Zoe Archer does a beautiful job with taking us back to the 1700s in Georgian England where we first meet James Sherbourne, Earl of Whitney. He has been immediately allured to a Romani gypsy Zora Grey. The narration and setting feel authentic and help to immerse you in the story.

The Hellraisers refer to a group of five guys caught in a bad bromance. Their name proclamations and the frequent way they referred to themselves initially really made me cringe. “Shall we investigate, Hellraisers?” “We’re Hellraisers, after all!” Sttttopppp!!! Any cool card you have by belonging to a clique called “Hellraisers” is lost when you continuously refer to the name of your own clique!

But I digress… I was not immediately in love with this book, but I was won over once the dark began. Zoe Archer did a fantastic job with creating multi-dimensional characters and giving them really awful curses, making you care for them more than you think you will. Overall, once I got in to the story, it moved right along and was enjoyable.

WLP: I’m a huge fan of Katie MacAlister but was really disappointed by It’s All Greek To Me. The heroine came across as a teenager even though she’s in her 30′s. She over talks at every chance she gets and keeps punching people out, thus her maturity level really killed any little bit of like I had for her.

It was supposed to be funny but sadly it fell flat for me. I just couldn’t get over how annoying she was. The happily ever after came way too fast considering both characters hated each other, add to that joking and making light about issues (rape, drinking problem) that aren’t very funny.

One of the characters gets into a heavy petting situation and screams rape (even when she knows it wasn’t rape), the main male character makes light of it. His brother also has a huge drinking problem, but after a bunch of episodes the only time he quits drinking is after his brother freaks out and tosses all the alcohol. Skip this one.

WLP: I loved Blood of Eden (released TOMORROW), give me a police procedural meets the paranormal any day! Do not hesitate to buy yourself a copy of this book, it’s full of action & a real page turner. I adored all the characters, you all will love Sloan she’s smart and kicks ass.

The whole concept is refreshing and new! Blood of Eden is one of my favourite new series of 2011!

I was very impressed with the way Ms. Dane tells a story, she gives you just enough info to get you hooked and doesn’t make anything predictable where you figure out the plot. It was seriously one of the best books I read in November! Seriously, why are you still here reading this, go buy a copy ASAP!

When Lord Arik, a druid knight, finds Rebeka Tyler wandering his lands without protection, he swears to keep her safe. But Rebeka can take care of herself. When Arik sees her clash with a group of attackers using a strange fighting style, he’s intrigued.
Rebeka is no ordinary seventeenth-century woman—she’s travelled back from the year 2011, and she desperately wants to return home. She poses as a scholar sent by the king to find out what’s killing Arik’s land. But as she works to decode the ancient runes that are the key to solving this mystery and sending her home, she finds herself drawn to the charismatic and powerful Arik.
As Arik and Rebeka fall in love, someone in Arik’s household schemes to keep them apart and a dark druid with a grudge prepares his revenge. To defeat him, Arik and Rebeka must combine their skills. Soon Rebeka will have to decide whether to return to the future or trust Arik with the secret of her time travel and her heart.

I don’t know what it is about time travel books that makes me love them. It could be the fact that I’m a history geek or that I like watching heroes and heroines go through the awkwardness of being in a time and society they’re not used to. Whatever the case if I see a book with a time travel storyline I’m likely to pick it up.   Here’s what I liked and didn’t like about Knight of Runes.

What I liked:

  • I liked the underlying theme in the romance between Arik and Rebekah – a bond that not even time could break. What romance reader doesn’t like the idea of love overcoming all odds, even if those odds are the space-time continuum?
  • The side characters were written really well and actually supported the hero and heroine instead of providing cheap laughs or a set up for book 2.  Logan, Doward, Jeannie, Audrey Skylar and others had depth and their own personalities.
  • I really enjoyed that the love between the two main characters didn’t start as a flash fire, all hot and heavy, but slowly simmered to a rich and true love.  I absolutely see the appeal of love at first sight books, I love the idea of falling hard and fast for someone but it wouldn’t have made sense in Knight of Runes and wouldn’t have been in character for either our hero or heroine. Arik is Lord and Master of a land that is being attacked by an outside force, he’s not going to accept some strange woman who’s shown up out of the blue. He’s going to watch and wait and evaluate her character and motives before letting himself become vulnerable enough to let her into his life.  Rebekah, on the other hand, is 400 years in the past and worried that a false move could adversely effect the future.  That kind of stress is not going to put anyone in the mood for love all too quickly.

What I didn’t like:

  • Rebekah’s so awesome it’s ridiculous.  A seasoned rock climber, a black belt in Karate, a University Professor and she has the presence of mind to use a water purification tablet that she just happens to have in her pack, so she can drink stream water without boiling it first, less than an hour after falling into a vortex that’s taken her back in time!   Rebekah has extensive knowledge about flora, fauna and soil, she is well-travelled, she can play the mandolin and knows a selection of 17th century songs and dance steps.  Her Dad was conveniently a professor of Druid mythology and so she can read Pict, Ogham and runes, everyone (well not everyone) immediately loves her and she barely bats an eye at being sent to the past. When will one of these type of books have a heroine who freaks out when she realizes there’s no indoor plumbing? Cause that’s what I’d be doing, just saying.
  • There are a lot of questions I still have I have about certain plot points. For example, who exactly is Rebekah’s father, what’s the skinny on Rebekah’s mom and what’s the deal with George Hughes? I’d also like more info about Bran, the off-page, villain ultimately behind all of Arik and Rebekah’s troubles, and Hugo his evil henchman. There were also answers to important plot points in the story that I felt were answered but were hastily dealt with and should have been afforded more page time.
  • I need to talk about the cover, it in no way related to the quality of the text within, but I need to get this off my chest. Look at this cover and tell me it doesn’t look like our pectorally perfect hero was run over by a car. It looks like there’s tire tread on this dude’s chest! As I read this book I came to realize that this is an artist’s interpretation of Arik’s tattoos as described in the story, but until that time every time I saw the cover I snickered.

It’d be very easy for me to over analyze King of Runes and make myself dislike it. Here’s the thing, I didn’t have enough of a problem with any of the aforementioned dislikes not to continue reading this book. Is it literary genius? No. Is there room for improvement? Yes. Overall though, an enjoyable read. It’s light and fluffy romance with enough intrigue, magic and angst to keep things interesting.

If you’re between books and you’re looking for some light romance with a sexy, druid hero and a super accomplished Univeristy professor this would be a good book for you.

AAD 2012 Author Spotlight & Giveaway: Kelly Meding

Authors After Dark 2012 Author Spotlight: Kelly Meding

Kelly Meding lives in a little town with a slightly neurotic cat. Writing through childhood, she wrote screenplays in high school and college and went back to prose during her last two years in college. When she is not writing or working, she will be found reading a good book, making jewelry, painting ceramics, playing with her cat, or watching movies. Some of her favorite movies include The Secret of NIMH (me too!), L.A. Confidential, Band of Brothers, A Nightmare on Elm Street (me too!) and The Dark Knight. Some of her favorite books are Watership Down by Richard Adams; The Story Girl, by LM Montgomery; The Stand by Stephen King; the Little House on the Prairie series; anything by Gena Showalter.

Kelly was able to take the time to sit down with us and answer some interview questions for us! Let us jump right in!

What is the first book you remember reading and loving as a child?

Oh wow, that’s a hard one. I’m not even sure how to answer that, because I’ve been in love with books as far back as I can remember.  One of my favorite book collections were the Serendipity books, named after a pink water dragon of the same name. Each book was about a different animal or creature, and they were so beautifully illustrated. I loved the pictures as much as the words in them.

The first chapter book I remember was probably something by Roald Dahl. I couldn’t tell you which one, but I’ve loved his books since childhood.

What is your first memory of realizing you were passionate about writing?

In seventh grade, I wrote my first “novel.” It was all handwritten in one of those black-and-white marbelized notebooks, and it was terrible. All cliches and bad teen soap opera, but I was so proud of this story. I gave it to my then-best friend to read over the summer.  Well, as adolescents do, we had a huge fight over something incredibly stupid, and in retaliation, then-best friend ripped the story to shreds and flushed it.

I was absolutely devastated. Not so much by losing her friendship (twelve year old girls can be incredibly fickle), but by her destroying the only copy I had of that book. It was the first time I realized how much I valued the stories I wrote, and how irreplaceable those words were once they were gone. After that, no only-copies of my work went to anyone except teachers for grading.

When you need to find inspiration in music, what do you turn to?

I have Rhapsody on my computer, so I can find almost anything I need. The music I listen to usually depends on the book I’m writing, or the scene I’m working on. My playlists are extremely eclectic. I listen to everything from Glee covers to metal to orchestral soundtracks.

What is the first thing you plan to do when you get to New Orleans for AAD?

After I lay down for a little while and get rid of the headache that inevitably comes from flying on an airplane? *grin* I want a beignet, baby! And I want to try real chicory coffee. I’m going to be in New Orleans, so I have to indulge a little in the food.  After that, I can’t wait to meet readers and other authors!

Do you have a guilty pleasure on TV, and if so, what is it?

I don’t watch as much TV as I used to, and when I do it’s usually Food Network or A&E. But I have been known to indulge in one of E!’s “America’s Next Top Model” marathons on occasion. Also “Flipping Out” is amusing in its own way.

Kelly Meding’s war-ravaged Los Angeles is ground zero for the ultimate Meta human showdown in this sexy, action-packed new series.

Fifteen years ago, Teresa “Trance” West was a skilled telepath and a proud member of the Ranger Corps. But ever since the Rangers were inexplicably rendered powerless at the climax of the devastating Meta War, she’s bounced from one dead-end job to another. Now her powers have reappeared just as mysteriously as they vanished – only they’re completely transformed and more potent than ever. And they’re threatening to destroy her.

Trance heads to Los Angeles to track down the surviving Rangers and discover who restored her powers – and why – but a phantom enemy is determined to kill them before they can reassemble. As they dodge his deadly attacks and come to terms with their new role as heroes, Trance and the rest of the team set out to annihilate the sinister madman… only to discover their own powers are his greatest weapons.

GIVEAWAY: Kelly Meding is offering up a signed copy of Trance to one of our lucky readers!! Just leave a comment and tell us what magical power you would have, if you you were granted one.

To purchase Heart of Darkness (A Bound By Magick Novel):

Someone is illegally siphoning magic from the font of the Clan. When Meriel Owen, next in line to control the largest organization of witches in the country, discovers that it’s the hot owner of a notorious underground club, she strokes an unusual deal that may plunge them all into the heart of darkness.

What a nice new PNR gem Heart of Darkness is! Meriel Owen is second in head to Clan Owen, and she must visit a newcomer violating Clan rules by tapping in to the Magick source without asking Clan permission first. It turns out that violator is Dominic Bright, a smoking hot owner of the human and supernatural club Heart of Darkness. I adored Mariel right from the start. Because of her status and upbringing in the Clan, she could have come across as a total bitch, but she charmed and flirted with the best of them and showed Dominic she was his match in all ways. She knew when and how to be forceful, yet still playful, too. She was highly intelligent and I just wanted her to really come out on top of this, and maybe wanted to secretly be her too. :P

Once she arrives at Heart of Darkness to reprimand Dominic and sees him across the room: boom. It’s on. Dominic is that fine dominant bad boy variety and from the moment the two characters see one another, the heat simmers. Throw in another very enticing character in to the scene and I was like, “Oh, I love this book.” And what do you know… turns Mariel and Dominic really are more than just simply hot for each other. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about who they were and why, and I enjoyed them learning to give the other one a chance with their trust and hearts.

The world building was quite well done. It was not overly complicated, but had enough oomph and unique twists to the way Magick works to keep it appealing. The supernatural element that brings Meriel and Dominic closer is very interesting, and discovering more about Clan versus un-Clan traditions and practices were well thought out. With this all being said, where Lauren Dane’s extraordinary abilities lie are with her relationship building. The couple could be in outer space, or at Disney World, and she consistently provides two compelling characters that I want to see win each other. She adds very real emotional elements that gave me goose bumps at one point, I just loved the true emotional journey this took me on. Lauren Dane always gives us highly sensual descriptions of her characters, and it will get your heart pumping!

If you are looking for a fast and fun sexy adult read, with endearing main characters very comfortable in their sensuality and a solid paranormal twist, look no further than Heart of Darkness. I will definitely be reading the second book in the series and I think this is a fantastic start to a new Paranormal Romance series. Way to go, Ms. Dane!

As an angel of death, Keenan’s job is to collect the souls on his list. He’s carried out his duty for two thousand years and never faltered once. Until he meets Nicole St. James. When the moment of death comes, Keenan hesitates, and instead of taking Nicole, Keenan touches the vampire who’s attacking her. Cast out of heaven for disobedience, Keenan plummets to earth. Six months later, he finally manages to track Nicole to a bar in Mexico. He’s stunned to discover that the woman he remembers has undergone a dramatic change – she’s become a vampire. And when he realises that she’s the target of all manner of enemies – other vampires, demons, even shifters – he’ll do whatever it takes to protect her, even if all hell breaks loose…

Angel of Darkness is the first book in a new series called The Fallen.

Keenan is the angel of death, one touch from him sends your soul straight to the otherside. Nicole was marked for death, until for some reason Keenan falters on his job and instead touching her he kills the vampire that was attacking her. Thus he falls, but it’s never simple when you fall and your senses come into play. You know, LUST.

I’m a Cynthia Eden virgin no more! Angel of Darkness is the first book by Ms. Eden that I have had a chance to read and I can say I wasn’t disappointed. I am not usually a fan of anything having to do with Angels, which many of you know. I was pleasantly surprised to find that Keenan wasn’t “that” kind of angel, he wasn’t typical and in fact he was downright unique. He’s a death angel, so he isn’t all pure goodness. Thankfully!

My major issue with the novel was that the romance felt forced and moved way too fast. I get it, it’s a PNR but I missed the slow build up and tension. You don’t just start making out right away! I was a bit disappointed there.

I loved the development of the world and the characters, more so Keenan then Nicole, I just couldn’t relate to her. Maybe it was the six month time gap between the prologue and chapter one. I would have liked to see how she developed from innocent to what she became, even if only for a chapter.

If you are looking for a new PNR series to start, get Angel of Darkness but be warned the romance aspect moves a little fast.
