WLPW2K: One Book.

September 20, 2010 in WLP Wants To Know

Tomorrow I am heading out to the cottage until Sunday, and of course the only thing I have packed are books & my Sony E-Reader. Priorities right? So while I’m sitting sipping my coffee I got to thinking, if I could only bring one book with me what book would it be.

My first thought, a First-Aid book. I am nothing if not prepared right? But how fun is that? Then I remembered the first book I ever bought with me to the cottage…

Charlie Asher is a pretty normal guy with a normal life, married to a bright and pretty woman who actually loves him for his normalcy. They’re even about to have their first child. Yes, Charlie’s doing okay-until people start dropping dead around him, and everywhere he goes a dark presence whispers to him from under the streets. Charlie Asher, it seems, has been recruited for a new position: as Death.

It’s a dirty job. But, hey! Somebody’s gotta do it.

We had a crowd of people up at the cottage that particular visit and I didn’t speak to a single one of them until I finished reading. I was hysterical, A Dirty Job was the first book that made me laugh so hard I cried & had to put the book down to clear my eyes. Whenever I need a really hard laugh, I always pick up a Christopher Moore book but to this day nothing has ever been as funny to me as A Dirty Job. It’s one book I refuse to lend to anyone, they must have their own copy.

WLPW2K: Your Favorite Re-Read

September 9, 2010 in WLP Wants To Know

I admit, I don’t re-read many books. Actually, I’ve probably only re-read 3 books in my life time. If an author has a really long release date, I may read the last 2-3 chapters, but never the whole book again. That said, there is one book that no matter how many time’s I’ve read it, I always go back to it.

In the summer of 1977, Victoria Leonard”s world changed forever-when Caitlin Somers chose her as a friend. Dazzling, reckless Caitlin welcomed Vix into the heart of her sprawling, eccentric family, opening doors to a world of unimaginable privilege, sweeping her away to vacations on Martha”s Vineyard, a magical, wind-blown island where two friends became summer sisters. . . .

Now, years later, Vix is working in New York City. Caitlin is getting married on the Vineyard. And the early magic of their long, complicated friendship has faded. But Caitlin has begged Vix to come to her wedding, to be her maid of honor. And Vix knows that she will go-for the friend whose casual betrayals she remembers all too well. Because Vix wants to understand what happened during that last shattering summer. And, after all these years, she needs to know why her best friend-her summer sister-still has the power to break her heart….

Many moons ago (aka high school, 1998) an ex’s mom lent this book to me and I never gave it back. Whenever I need to clear my head of all the PR/UF I’ve read, I always go back to Summer Sisters. If  I am being honest, this more then likely is my favorite book of all time.  It was the first book I picked up in high school that had nothing to do with school, it’s just such a great read I can always go back to it and I do learn a little bit more every time I read it.

I want to know, what is your favorite re-read?

What book can’t you bare to leave behind?

How many copies of it have you been through?

WLPW2K – Wedding Horror Stories

September 4, 2010 in WLP Wants To Know

Sunday I finally become the Maid of Horror, ahem I mean Honor.

It feels like we’ve been doing wedding related things for 2 years, when in reality it hasn’t even been a year. Please pray that the aisle is short and I don’t take a fainting spell. Honestly, that’s my biggest worry..do not faint and do not have a panic attack.

You see, I hate being the centre of attention, so much so I asked the bride to please for the love of all things Pixie…let me sit after I grab her flowers. Thank goddess she rocks and agreed. She know’s what happens when she doesn’t, I jump all over her.

My worst wedding story, a family members wedding I was in. The dress cost 240.00, then because I am teeny and bridesmaid dresses are not…120.00 in ALTERATIONS.  I was told my tattoo had to be covered up by my aunt in law (it’s on my back) so I had to buy the matching shawl (80 dollars people). Guess who told us not to wear the bloody shawls? Yes, my aunt in law AFTER I paid all this money for it. Oh did I forget the best part, we wore flip flops….75 dollar flip flops.

I want to know your worst wedding story. Maid of honor dress from hell? (I want pics) Did it rain at your wedding? Did you hate sitting through someone else’s wedding? Gimmie your wedding horror stories!

*Send good JuJu on Sunday, so I don’t trip, take a header, faint, panic or flash my bum*

*Open bar people, did I mention that? Oh and chocolate fountain..I luv the bride*

WLPW2K: Readers Block?

August 24, 2010 in WLP Wants To Know

There is a lesser known phenomena in the blogger world, I’d like to confess today:

I have readers block.

You know writers have writers block, well this blogger has blogger block aka readers block. I know I’m not alone, a few of us have discussed this issue at length. I read a book a day all last week, yet it’s now Tuesday and I haven’t touched a book since I finished my last one on Sunday.

I looked at my TBR pile and giggled, then looked at my EReader and I didn’t giggle. I think I “over read” last week and my brain is saying take a few days off Pix…so I’m listening to it, for once.

Am I alone? Are there days where you need a break from your reading? How do you get out of that funk?

WLPW2K: Rating Books

August 21, 2010 in WLP Wants To Know

I’m kinda weird when it comes to rating books. Within the first two chapters I make a rough assessment, 1-5 of what I think I’ll end up rating the book at. By the middle of the book, I pretty much have the rating I am going to stick with. Unless something drastic happens near the end of the book, I usually stick to that rating.

I almost never take notes, weirdly enough the only time I take notes is when I really dislike a book and I feel the need to explain why I didn’t like said book. Other then that, I may mark off a quote but I usually go from what I remember. If I remember something well enough, it’s usually a good book.

So I want to know, am I weird? (duh)

How do the rest of you bloggers and readers rate books?
