Remeberance Day & Veterans Day

November 11, 2011 in Pixie Related

Today in Canada we celebrate Remembrance Day which is basically the same as the USA’s Veteran’s Day. My biological father was a member of the US Marine Core, my grandfathers on my Mom’s side the Canadian Merchant Marines.

A few years ago I was introduced to my friends brother in-law Kris. During his USMC training he started developing headaches, little did he know it was brain cancer. Kris passed away 5 years ago next month, he was 19.

Kris was sarcastic, hilarious and a fighter right to the very end. The day before he passed he didn’t pass up an opportunity to tease his sister in-law. He was just that type of person and I only knew him a few short months.

I was lucky enough to have a chance to shoot the shit with his snarky self and send him a blanket because he was always cold at the end stages. Shortly after Kris passed away, his sister in-law (who has been my web adopted sister for 10 years) sent me the blanket back & a USMC full sized flag. Both are encased in plastic and will forever remind me of Kris. Kris’ memorial video can be watched here

Never forget the heroes you know and the one’s you’ll never meet.

Mini Monday Reviews (Bad Luck Cadet, Snap, Bloodstone, Just My Bloodtype)

November 10, 2011 in Monday Mini Reviews

We have a guest author on Monday, so next weeks instalment of Mini Monday Reviews has been moved to Thursday!

Free Read at:

When I saw the premiss of Bad Luck Cadet I knew I had to read it. Suzy Ivy damn near made me pee myself! Out of nowhere Ivy decides she is going to join the police force, what follows is the funny and some truly touching moments. What I know for sure, Ivy is one kick ass lady with a sense of humour that every single police officer should have. She loves her job and watch out if she arrests you, she might hug you. Seriously.

Free Read at:

I’m friends with the subject of this story on Twitter, Xan and he has no idea I’ve read his story. Xan is a vampire who lives in a bar and is the bassist for the band Crooked Fang. When romance author Therese comes for a visit, the attraction is undeniable. You’ll fall in love with Xan in this short story, but rest assured a full length novel is coming soon. Just My Blood Type is a short read (26 pages) and it just wets the appetite. No pun intended. Maybe.

Buy Snap at:

While I loved the idea of the story (SNAP, a multinational celeb TV show and magazine, is the holy grail for Maxie Gwenoch. When she snags the job as managing editor, she’s looking for fame, fortune and Jimmy Choos. What she finds is a media empire owned by Baron Kandesky and his family. A family of vampires. They’re European, urbane, wealthy and mesmerizing. And when she meets Jean-Louis, vampire and co-worker, she’s a goner.), it just didn’t work for me. I felt it moved too slow and was often very confusing as it shifted back and forth too much. I thought there would be more humour, alas it didn’t work well for me. I really wanted to like this story but it just didn’t work.

Buy Bloodstone at:

I love me some Stacy Justice and once again Barbra Annino doesn’t disappoint in this the follow up to Opal Fire! I loved that Stacy finally picks her man, and that she is still terrible with her magic. I did miss her crazy aunt because she doesn’t get as much time in the book. My only issue was the diary entries from Stacy’s “sister”, she really irritated me. I couldn’t stand the kid, she didn’t come across as any character I would like to hear from. I’d have much rather heard Aunt L! Still, an enjoyable read! Can’t wait to see what’s next for the women who are becoming my favourite witches.

Holy Smokin Banana – I dont know how to title this, help!

November 9, 2011 in Authors, Book Cons

This post is a GIANT “Thank You!!!!!” to the Book community I feel so blessed to be a part of.

I purchased a Readers n ‘ritas Friends ticket in August and have been so freaking excited for the event coming up this weekend! It’s a book convention here in central Texas, and an opportunity to meet some of my most favorite authors: Vicki Pettersson, Ann Aguirre, and Jaye Wells, to name a few. It is also an opportunity to meet up with fellow book bloggers I’d been dying to meet for the first time, as well as a chance to see some again I met in Philly at AAD.

As you may already know, my first dog Dakota was diagnosed with aggressive terminal cancer last week on Thursday. Putting that personal sob story aside, I’ve been trying to get in touch with Fresh Fiction, who holds Readers N ‘ritas, to cancel my registration and issue a ticket refund of $125 since Friday. I’m about 3 hours from the location, it’s a weekend event, and I don’t want to lose a minute of time with my dog. And, quite frankly, with our growing vet bills, I really need that money back. Even a partial refund would help.

Four various emails pleading for assistance, and a handful of Twitter DMs later, my request was finally acknowledged today by the Director of Fresh Fiction. To sum up her answer and tone, it went like this: “No Refunds” and “You can sell your ticket and we’ll transfer the name of the ticket to the new holder.” But this isn’t a post on that. This is a post on all of the amazing good that came after that from everyone but Fresh Fiction.

I did what the Fresh Fiction Director recommended, and took to Twitter in an attempt to find someone to buy my ticket. In explaining why I was in such a distressed need to sell the ticket, the response I received was nothing I was prepared for.

Humbled. Overwhelmed. Touched. Warmed. Inspired. Enlightened. Loved. Changed.

These are words that only attempt to describe how I feel right now. I would like to thank the following people for reaching out to me and trying to help me in this crappy situation:

Chelsea of Vamp Book Club for immediately offering to help me sell my ticket. And starting the “If you buy SpazP’s ticket I will…” campaign. In addition, thank you for asking me if there were any autographs you could collect for me as well. You are a gem, truly.

Tori for offering up 6 months of undying love if you buy my ticket. I mean… HELLO. This is HUGE. And believe me, this is not offered lightly. You’d be lucky to have just 1 month of Tori’s undying love, but 6? This is a major prize.

Amanda Bonilla for offering up a signed ARC of Shaedes of Gray — holy crap, you guys. This is one of my most favorite books of the year so far. It’s been so hard to not talk about it! So I pretty much barfed in excitement over this generosity. You want this!

NAT/WLP…  for generously stating that the buyer of my ticket simply wouldn’t be shanked. That is love, people. Also for offering to sharpen my knife, when I needed it. And for successfully making me giggle throughout the day, every day. I am so blessed to have Nat as a Friend.

Synde of Cemetary Cat Designs for offering up 10% off her jewelry and free shipping for a year. Say what now? Some of my most favorite jewelry? Offered at 10% off with free shipping? Okay now I’ve gone from tearing up to ugly crying.

Sierra Dean for $25 gift card to Samhain publishing’s site. Okay stop, just stop. This is seriously too much, I can’t handle it! I’m not worthy! I’m not worthy! Sierra is Gold.

Berrin Rae for offering up a free eCopy of Knightfall. OMG. Speechless.

PJ Schnyder for offering up free copies of ALL her current titles, aaaaand now I’m sobbing again…Seriously, PJ is one of those people I feel blessed to know. Not only am I fan of her work, I adore her as a person.

Liza contacted me and said she’d throw in a Gift Card to Amazon for $15 if someone would buy my ticket!!

Cherry Adair for reaching out to me privately in email, with very nice words of encouragement and ass kicking sentiments. She even offered to pay for my ticket even if she’s not going!

It just doesn’t get better than this, right? Well, the gesture that made me pass out, pick myself up off the floor, and then faint again, was by Ann Aguirre who offered to immediately fix this. She insisted on covering my ticket, even if we couldn’t find someone to buy it. In fact, since she was leaving for Texas to the R&R con the following day, she insisted she send me the money that night. And she did it. Ann Aguirre sent me $125 to my PayPal account, in a matter of seconds. Something I’d been pleading with Fresh Fiction for days to help me with. I still don’t even know how to fully put in to words the extend of my gratitude.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to everyone who reached out to me, said kind words, and offered words of support overall. In the end this wasn’t about the money, although let’s face it, I really need it for the vet bills. What I walked away with was an experience I will never ever forget, and will most definitely focus on paying all this kindness forward. I am basking in the light.

All my love and gratitude, Pamela AKA Spaz

Update 7:32 PM (CST): We have a buyer! Stacy with Girls in the Stacks will be attending in my place! *throws confetti* I hope she has the best time!!

AAD 2012 Author Spotlight: Melissa Schroeder

November 9, 2011 in Authors, Book Cons

Today’s AAD Author Spotlight features Melissa Schroeder, writer extraordinaire of “Erotic Romance with a Slap and a Tickle”. She was kind enough to answer a few questions I have of her, because she is a new-to-me author! I found her to be quite lovely! – Spaz

So, Melissa…

What is the first book you remember reading and loving as a child?

Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter. Those were my favorite for so long.

What is your first memory of realizing you were passionate about writing?

I had the idea I wanted to be a writer from the time I read To Kill A Mockingbird, but I didn’t act on it until my Creative Writing class in college. I knew once I ditched the painful poetry I was writing and turned to prose, I wanted to be a writer.

When you need to find inspiration in music, what do you turn to?

I have a soundtrack for each one of my books. A lot of times a song will remind me of the couple or of just the hero or heroine. For A Little Harmless Submission, the two songs that stood out to me were I Want Love by Elton John which was Rome’s, the hero, song. I wrote the last scene to that song playing over and over. The other one was a song that reminds me of the two characters, Rome and Maria, Keith Urban’s Without You.

I do have faves that show up on almost every list. Sex on Fire by Kings of Leon, Animals by Nickleback, Collide by Howie Day, and I have so many more. I use them for inspiration and to tune out the noise around me. I have ADD so I have to make sure I can focus solely on my writing, and not my kids beating each other up.

Do you have a guilty pleasure on TV, and if so, what is it?

Tosh.O is my big guilty pleasure. I cannot get enough of that show.

What is the first thing you plan on doing when you get to New Orleans for AAD?

First place, after the five hour drive, I will want a beignet and coffee at one of the little Cafe Du Monde’s.

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer our questions, Melissa, and we can’t wait to see you in New Orleans!!

Just in time for Veteran’s Day, Melissa’s first Military Harmless book comes out this November 11!

Infatuation: A Little Harmless Military Romance #1 (November 11th)

Francis McKade is a man in lust. He’s had a crush on his best friend’s little sister for years but he has never acted on it. Besides that fact that she’s Malachi’s sister, he’s a Seal and he learned his lesson with his ex-fiancé. Women do not like being left alone for long months at a time. Still, at a wedding in Hawaii anything can happen—and does. Unfortunately, after the best night of his life, he and Mal are called away to one of their most dangerous missions.

Shannon is blown over by Kade. She’s always had a crush on him and after their night together, it starts to feel a little like love. But, after the mission, Kade never calls or writes and she starts to wonder if it was all a dream. Until one night, her brother Mal drags him into her bar and grill and Shannon gets the shock of her life.

Kade isn’t the man Shannon knew in Hawaii, or even the last few years. Twelve hours of torture changes a man, especially one who had never felt so vulnerable. He still can’t shake the terror that keeps him up at night. Worse, he is realizing that the career he loves just might be over. He isn’t fit for Shannon, or the love she offers him. When she won’t leave him alone, he decides to prove his point.

Shannon is still mad, but she can’t help but hurt for the man she loves. He is darker, a bit more dangerous, but beneath that, he is the Kade she has known for so many years. When he pushes her to her limits in the bedroom, Shannon refuses to back down. One way or another, this military man is going to learn there is no walking away from love—not while she still has breath in her body.
