Danger waits on both sides of the grave.
Half-vampire Cat Crawfield and her vampire husband Bones have fought for their lives, as well as for their relationship. But just when they’ve triumphed over the latest battle, Cat’s new and unexpected abilities threaten to upset a long-standing balance…
With the mysterious disappearance of vampires, rumors abound that a species war is brewing. A zealot is inciting tensions between the vampires and ghouls, and if these two powerful groups clash, innocent mortals could become collateral damage. Now Cat and Bones are forced to seek help from a dangerous “ally”–the ghoul queen of New Orleans herself. But the price of her assistance may prove more treacherous than even the threat of a supernatural war. …to say nothing of the repercussions Cat never imagined.
This was my most anticipated read of February & I was disappointed but This Side of the Grave. I’m sure to be one of the few who wasn’t a fan of the latest installment of the Cat & Bones series. This time around, Cat & Bones are trying to find out who is causing the disappearance of vampires, vampires who are turning up dead. More focus was given to Cat & Bones relationship, which I was fine with.
Of course there are a few hot sex scenes, one of which I felt was totally unnecessary. If you are trying to find the person who wants you dead, you do not leave your post to come sleep with your wife, but hey that’s just me. Yes, I get you’re worried one of you might die but seriously? Leaving & flying back to have sex. No. No. No. For me, the candle wax scene was a bit over the top. Sorry, candle wax on a mans junk, hell no.
What I took biggest issue with was the fact that (at least to me) this book had more focus on Cat & Bones relationship issues, well mainly Cat’s. But when it came time for the big showdown, it was very wham bam it’s over. You know right from the start who the big bad is, the lead up is almost all of the book, but when we get to the showdown it all happens really fast & the lead up felt like nothing.
The best part of This Side of the Grave was the emotions & they were flying. Something big goes down with someone Cat knows & it’s extremly emotional…that said…..another thing happens that ruined all that emotion for me.
I really wasn’t a fan of the plot, I felt like more could have been done with Marie the Ghoul Queen to make it a little bit more interesting. Of course I love Vlad, so it was great to have him back though I wish he would get a spin-off series, ASAP. The ending was a bit ridiculous for me, but of course I can’t tell you what all that is about because it would ruin it for you. But when I read it, I rolled my eyes. Like really? REALLY? ARGH!
An okay addition to the series, but nothing that’s going to take you by surprise…well maybe the candle wax.
