WLP Epic News Update

November 22, 2010 in Book News

November has been a big month for news over here at WLP, so I figured it was time to give you the scoop!

The first big set of news, I started a new job last week! I am now doing Social Media Freelance for Macmillan, I am in charge of the Paranormal Romance/Urban Fantasy Twitter & Facebook accounts & will be contributing one new blog post a month once the Community launches. So come say hi, keep me company!

Starting November 29th, I am doing my own Jennifer Rardin Memorial Reading Challenge. I’d love for everyone to join & read Jennifer’s amazing Jaz Parks Series. Jennifer passed away on September 20th & she was one of the nicest authors out there. I’m not going to put a strict date on this, if you want to participate let me know in the comments & then I can start dating when we should finish book one, etc. A big thanks to my friend Jan at TwoScoopz for the awesome challenge button.

  1. Once Bitten, Twice Shy
  2. Another One Bites The Dust
  3. Biting The Bullet
  4. Bitten To Death
  5. One More Bite

Wicked Lil Pixie has been nominated for the first annual Bookie Awards for Blog of the Year (2010) at the Authors After Dark Convention. I am really honored by this, as last year at AAD people nominated by hand. The voting has started & I am up against some of my favorites (as usual). Go vote for your favorite blog, here.

WLP has also been nominated for Best Blog Of All Time (yes I so had to make a Kanye reference when I heard…i’mma let you finish), Best Blog About Stuff & Best Hobby Blog. Not sure if it’s legit, but it still made me cackle.

My site was nominated for Best Blog of All Time!

I’m not sure if you are all aware, but my Spaz aka Pam is a runner. I damn near died when I saw this picture & I had to share it with you all. How can you not love Pam?

Thursday, I am guest blogging over at All Things Urban Fantasy. Abigail has some of us telling you about our “Turkey Reads”, the one book we didn’t like in 2010. Mine is sure to cause shanking by author……*shudder*

It’s almost that time again! 13 Wicked Days of Christmas! Whoo Hoo! I had such a blast with all the authors involved last year, that I decided to do it again! 13 straight days of Author Interviews, Vlogs & Guest Posts…each day ending with a contest! We are almost booked up, but so far we have:

RIP Jennifer Rardin

September 22, 2010 in Authors

While driving home from the cottage, I recieved a piece of news that shocked me into one of those states of denial where you don’t believe what you’ve just read.

On Monday September 20th, Jennifer Rardin unexpectedly passed away.

I’ve never had the chance to meet Jennifer in person, but she was one of the first authors I contacted for an interview when I just was getting started last year. She was one of the nicest authors and put me at ease right away with her sense of humor & her obvious love for her family.

I cried on and off on the drive home. Jennifer’s passing got me thinking just how authors touch our lives. They aren’t just people who write stories, they’re people with families but still take the time out to chat with fans on Facebook or Twitter or Email. Some of them feel sorta like family after awhile, either through their books, interaction online or a combo of the two.

I will remember Jennifer for how she never failed to make me laugh with her daily Facebook Status Updates. They never failed to make me smile & belly laugh.

To leave condolences for Jennifer Rardin, her husband & two children please go here

Shawn @ Suvudu has written a touching post about Jennifer’s passing here

Nicole Peeler also posted about Jennifer’s passing. Nicole also had some things to say on Twitter that struck a cord with me. We should not take each other for granted & live life to the fullest.

I have decided, in October to do a Jaz Parks Reading Challenge in Jennifer’s honor. If you haven’t read the series, go out and get the books. We’ll read them together and celebrate Jennifer’s life that way.

13 Wicked Days of Christmas With Jennifer Rardin

December 19, 2009 in Author Interviews, Contests

XmasRED

1079235_215X340WLP:  Can you tell us, what your favorite Christmas related smell is?

Jen:  I love the smell of mulled cider.  We’ve made it along with Christmas Eve dinner for the past few years, and I’ve gotta say it gives me that happy, IT’S NEARLY CHRISTMAS!! feeling.

WLP:  What about the worst gift you’ve received?

Jen:  You know, I can’t tell you the story because the gifter is still living, and might hear about it, and I’d rather keep peace in the family.  However I will say I was so insulted and pissed off that I fumed for the rest of the afternoon and evening.  I don’t get mad like that anymore.  I finally realized life’s too short for that kind of silliness.

WLP:  Best gift received:

Jen:  A couple of years ago my hubby got me a new engagement ring to replace my original, the band of which had broken.  I cried.  Not so much because the ring was beautiful, which it was, but because he still loved me enough to give me something that meant he still wanted to hang out with me for the rest of our lives.

WLP:  Favorite Christmas Food:

Jen:  My Christmas is not complete unless I have eggnog.  And the best part?  Nobody else in my family likes it, so I don’t have to share.  Yessss!

WLP:  Do you have any holiday traditions?

Jen:  Our family has a trunkload of traditions.  What I like best about us is that we’re adding new ones and dropping tired ones all the time.  Here are a few of my faves:

*For the past three years everyone has pitched in to make a homemade (that’s right—no kits allowed!) gingerbread house.  We’ve improved our technique each year so that our building has progressed from looking like a bombed-out church in 2006 to a halfway decent rat-trap in 2008!  Keep an eye on my website (http://www.jenniferrardin.com) for 2009’s construction!

*Our son (who’s now 17) is allowed to wake us up at any time he wishes on Christmas morning.  This has varied in years past from four to six a.m.  He just told me he might be able to hold off until seven this year.  Sweet!

*My husband always takes the kids on a Christmas Eve shopping trip, even if all the presents have been accounted for.  They love this time they get to bond, be silly, and find last-minute fun gifts.

WLP:  Favorite Christmas Movie or Favorite Christmas Song?

Jen:  My favorite Christmas movie is Scrooged, starring Bill Murray.  For many years in a row we used to watch it on Christmas Eve.  Eventually we began to memorize entire scenes and we dropped that tradition.  But I still love it!

WLP:  What is the worst gift you’ve personally given someone?

Jen: I gave away a set of horrific wind chimes last year.  It was more of a joke than a serious gift, but they were still so tacky I could barely stand to see them opened!

WLP: What is your favorite book of 2009?

Jen:  I didn’t read many books this year (because I spend most of my spare time either writing or talking to fans), and my favorite was published a few years ago.  But the one I enjoyed most was His Majesty’s Dragon by Naomi Novik, book one in the Temeraire series.

jennifer_rardin-bitemarksWLP:  Bite Marks came out October 2009, what is next in the Jaz Parks series?

Jen: The next book is called Bitten in Two.  It will release in January 2011.  I’m really excited about it, because it takes place in Marrakech, Morocco, which inspired me immensely with its fascinating history and gorgeous architecture.  And I’ve just finished outlining the eighth book in the series, the working title of which is The Deadliest Bite.  So I’ll be starting it tomorrow.  It’ll answer many questions for readers and give them an idea of where their favorite characters are headed without putting an absolute ending to the series.  That way if I ever want to come back to it, I can.

WLP:  What does 2010 look like for writing and publishing, in your world?

Jen:  2010 will be a somewhat nerve wracking year for me.  Because I’ll be finishing the last book in my Jaz Parks contract, I’ll be pitching two new urban fantasy series’, one for adults, and one for younger readers.  Here’s hoping a couple of stellar editors decide to snag them!

WLP:  Yesterday, Michele Bardsley got the chance to ask you a question. Michele asked: If you had a million tax free dollars what would you buy first, and why?

Jen: Well, Michele, I’d pay to get my kids through college.  I know it sounds a lot more humdrum than a red Ferrari, but I figure once they get their degrees, they’ll be making enough moola to buy me (this) one anyway, plus take care of themselves so I don’t have to.  Now that’s a good investment!

WLP:  Tomorrow, I have author & blogger Marta Acosta here.  Ask Marta anything and she has to answer tomorrow!

Jen:  Hi, Marta!  Here’s what I want to know…if Santa were to leave a vampire under your tree, what would you do with him?

Thanks so much!  I had a great time chatting with you!  And to those of you who are new to the Jaz Parks series, please feel free to drop me a line at any of my online sites.  I check them daily and respond regularly.  Happy Holidays to you all!

Bitten To Death – Jennifer Rardin

December 12, 2009 in Reviews

n252549Jaz Parks here. My latest mission has taken me to the ancient Greek city of Patras; but instead of soaking up its splendor, I’m here to infiltrate a Vampere Trust. Only two vamps have ever escaped the tightly bound communities and lived to tell the tale: Edward “The Raptor”Samos, the most reviled criminal mastermind in recent memory, and Vayl, the CIA’s number one assassin who also happens to be my boss.

The Raptor is trying to take over Vayl’s former Trust. Unfortunately the Trust’s new leader has her own plans.

This job is going to be the death of me.

I am a “bit” late coming into Jen’s Jaz Park’s Series, on an extremely long first phone call convo with Judi aka Sidhe Vicious I got the low down on the series and promptly went out and bought the first three books in the series. I haven’t stopped reading them since, this is one of my favorite series now. I went and bought the remaining three and have been reading very slowly so I can savour the series. Pathetic I am, I don’t want them to end!

Jaz is a CIA assassin partnered with her boss, a very old vampire, Vayl. Jaz has survived death and in the process gained an ability to sense vampires and is imune to their powers. In Bitten to Death (Book 4) they go to Greece to once again try and stop Edward Samos (a real big bad), as usual something else comes up. This time it’s a bunch of issues at Vayl’s old vampire Trust, otherwise known as a Family. Jaz finds out more secrets about Vayl’s past that freak her out and make her wonder if she should just give up any idea of them ever being a couple. Meanwhile, Jaz’s twin brother Dave, is still trying to get over basically being made a zombie by the Wizard and has turned to alcohol to dull the whole ordeal. Dave is on this mission with Jaz and Vayl and things are about to get real funky when a secret Vayl’s hidden turns on them all.

I am a huge fan of Jen’s writing, the sexual tension between Jaz and Vayl is unlike anything I’ve ever read. I want to jump through the book and strangle Jaz whilst screaming “Jump his bones girl”. Between the action and the sexual tension, there’s hilarious inner monologues with Jaz talking to herself and the voices in her head. Nevermind the scene where Jaz gets humped by a giant dog, I was in hysteric’s picturing it.

If you haven’t read this series, run out and get it. You’ll thank me later. It’s truly one of the best Urban Fantasy series out there.

Rating 5/5
