Monday Mini Reviews

June 20, 2011 in Monday Mini Reviews

I am so far behind on writing reviews, so I figured Monday will now be our “cheat day”. You don’t need to hear me re-hash what it says in the blurb on Amazon, you want the straight up goods & what we all think about a book. Back Log  = Monday Mini Reviews.

Today I am going to tackle:

Frostbound is the final book in Sharon Ashwood’s Dark Forgotten series & I am sorry to see such a great series go. The characters (Talia & Lore) were my favorites out of all the previous books, the chemistry between them was electric. The pace was fast & as usual the world building phenomenal! And the plot, whoa. Frostbound had one hell of a plot which made reading a total treat. There’s so much going on, but told in a way to keep you caught up & on the tips of your toes, hanging off the couch.

Frostbound is totally worth the read, but I am so sad to see such a great series end.

Kitty’s Big Trouble is the 9th book in the series & my least favorite of the bunch. I found that there was a lot of whining on Kitty’s part, that she’d lost her edge. I loved that we got more Cormac then we have recently, but I find there was more chemistry between Cormac & Kitty then there is between her & Ben. I wasn’t a fan of the storyline at all, General Sherman means nothing to me as a Canadian. I admit, I had to look on Wikipedia to figure out who he was.

While I still think this series is underrated, I don’t think this was the best of the bunch for Kitty. For American History buffs, you’d love it.

I love the way Shiloh Walker writes a novel, especially in a series where you can pick up any book & it will totally stand alone. This is the case with Hunter’s Fall, while it’s the 13th book in the series, you don’t need to have read the previous books. The pace was steady & action packed, which made it a quick read. While I absolutly loved Dominic, Nessa drove me slightly batty. She’s still suffering, all these years later by events that happened in her past. She doesn’t seem to come out of this depression & that wore on me. The ending was a bit too predictable for me, I knew what was going to happen.

Not a bad book by any means, I just wish Nessa would have got over it all.

Faced with a custody battle for her daughter, monster-killer Ashe Carver has hung up her stakes and taken a job at the public library. But then after centuries guarding a supernatural prison, the dashing Captain Reynard strides into her world. He has only weeks to live unless Ashe finds the thief who took his soul-and he’s too drop-dead gorgeous to die…

Unchained is the third novel in Sharon Ashwood’s Dark Forgotten Series, this time focusing on Captain Reynard. Captain Reynard works in the Castle, the Supernatural Prison. Though he works as a Guard, he basically is a prisoner himself. When he was taken to the Castle, his soul was taken & placed in an Urn…but now that Urn has been stolen & the further away Reynard is from him, the shorter his life span becomes.

Ashe Carver is a widow who met Reynard while helping her sister in the Castle, after retiring as a monster slayer. But the monsters keep on coming & Ashe can’t seem to stop, until it possibly costs her the custody of her daughter. Together Ashe & Reynard must find his soul & keep Ashe’s daughter safe.

What more can I say but “wow”! Sharon Ashwood not only captured a working single mother striving to provide for her daughter & keep her safe, but filled this book with action! Sharon Ashwood writes a world that is not only something from your worst nightmares (eek! bunny!) but a world thats filled with a team of people keeping the world safe for everyone.

I loved that Ashe was a widow with a daughter, it’s different & it worked but I would have loved to seen more interaction between Reynard & Ashe’s daughter, especially towards the end. And I have to say Ashe is one kick ass woman, both as a mom & as a monster slayer…she is passionate about everything in her life.

Thought Reynard & Ashe are the main characters, I fell in love with a secondary character. Miru-Kai, a Dark Fae Prince who is locked up in the Castle, you had to feel for him & understand some of his actions & why he did them. There is also appearances from some of the previous characters in books 1 & 2, which I loved.

If you are looking for an action packed PR, pick up Unchained.

Scorched – Sharon Ashwood

December 3, 2009 in Reviews

ScorchedEx-detective Macmillan always had a taste for bad girls, but his last lover really took the cake—and his humanity. Now half-demon, Mac’s lost his friends, his family and his job.

But Constance, a strangely innocent vampire trapped in the supernatural Castle prison, needs his help. Her son has been kidnapped, so suddenly Mac has a case to work—one that embroils him with a mad sorcerer, an even madder city council, and a winged love god. The trail leads deep into the supernatural prison, and Mac soon learns that cracking the case will cost him his last scrap of his humanity.

Fiery, vulnerable Constance will do anything for those she loves, including Mac. He’ll be damned if he turns his back on her… and a demon forever if he doesn’t.

In Sharon Ashwood’s second installment of The Dark Forgotten Series, we learn more about the mysterious Castle and find out if Mac is going to embrace his “inner” demon.

In Ravenous, Mac is a cop who basically gets screwed over while on a long over-due break at the local watering hole. Mac kisses Geneva who turns out to be a Soul Eating Demon, that simple kiss turns Mac into one as well. When Holly Carver (a witch) sends Geneva back to the Castle, Geneva looses the demon and automatically turns back to a human and dies. Mac disappears during all of this, so at the end of Ravenous we are left wondering what happened to Mac.

Scorched tells us where Mac ended up, but as soon as he comes back to town, he is immediately met by Alessandro (Holly’s vampire Chosen) who is basically a paranormal cop of sorts. After a struggle Mac finds himself back in the Castle, a place that was built by Sorcerers to put all kinds of paranormals in, a type of jail if you will. We find out that the Castle’s magic is failing and the guards have started to revolt in an attempt to get things back to the way they were, by kidnapping Constance’s son who they believe can fix the Castle. Mac and Constance end up coming together to save her son, while trying to save the Castle at the same time. Mac can’t forget his police background even as a demon. Constance, having been put into the Castle right after being turned into a vampire hasn’t been out in the world since she was 17. She will do anything to save the child she’s raised as her own.

Sharon’s writing in this book is simply incredible, the descriptions of the various parts of the Castle made it feel like a real place. A place in your worst nightmares, teeming with monsters and things that should never see the light of day. The Dark Forgotten Series is one of my favorites to come out this year, I find that I savour everything written and take my time reading it. It’s so detail rich, the character development leaves you with visuals, you can imagine you’re in the room with some of the characters. Scorched is  fast-paced, with lots of twists and turns to keep your attention from wavering. You NEED to know what happens next! Not only does the story follow Mac and Constance (HOT!), but Holly and Alessandro have big parts in it as well. Sharon’s writing is like fine wine, you want to savour it slowly. There’s some big surprises as well, but I won’t even give you a hint, you’ll want to find out on your own.

Scorched will leave you begging for more, thankfully Unchained is due out July 2010.
